I recently started theater again. I auditioned and got cast in ensemble for South Pacific. I have a very minor role as a tired nurse.
This show is being directed by my old HS theater teacher which is a big reason why I chose to audition. He and I remain close. There are two people from HS that I know and I’ve been a little better at talking to them. Back in HS, I admired them so much and was intimidated because they are amazing actors.
There are so many people in the cast and I feel like an outsider looking in sometimes. I never know how to approach and make conversation. I’m just kind of staring at everyone. 😅
How do you go about making new friends? How do you start a conversation?
... Read moreIt's totally normal to feel like an outsider, especially when joining a new group like a theater cast! I've been there, staring at everyone, wondering how to even say 'hi.' We all want to connect, but sometimes that first step is the hardest. The good news is, once you get past that initial hurdle and start those first conversations, the next step is often, 'Okay, what do we do together?' That's where building those connections into genuine friendships really begins.
For anyone else wondering how to turn those casual chats in the rehearsal space into something more, or looking for low-key activities to do with potential new friends (or even existing ones!), I've found a few things that really work for me. These aren't just for 'best friends' but for anyone you're trying to get to know better and deepen a connection with.
My Go-To Activities for Building New Connections:
Casual Coffee or Tea Dates: Instead of a big, intimidating outing, suggest grabbing a quick coffee or tea. It's low commitment, easy to keep short if needed, and a great way to chat without a lot of pressure. Maybe you spot someone leaning against a teal wall during a break – that's your chance to ask if they want to grab a quick drink after rehearsal!
Explore a Shared Hobby (Outside the Main Activity): Since you're in theater, maybe suggest watching a local play or a movie that relates to your interests. Or, if you discover a shared love for something completely different, like board games, hiking, or even a specific type of cuisine, propose doing that together! It gives you a built-in activity and something natural to talk about.
Visit a Local Market or Park: Sometimes just walking around a new part of town, exploring a farmers' market, or strolling through a local park can be a fun, no-pressure activity. You're experiencing something new together, which naturally creates shared memories and conversation topics. Think of it as a casual adventure from a yellow exit door into the world outside your usual haunts.
Try a New Class or Workshop Together: This could be anything from a dance class to a pottery workshop or even a cooking class. Learning something new side-by-side can be incredibly bonding. You're both in a new environment, potentially making mistakes and laughing together, which is a fantastic way to break down barriers.
Volunteer for a Cause: If you find someone who shares a passion for a particular local cause, volunteering together can be incredibly rewarding and bonding. You're working towards a common goal and seeing each other's character in action, which builds trust and respect quickly.
Exercise Buddies: Going for a walk, a light jog, or even trying a new fitness class together. It's active, can be done at various intensity levels, and you have something specific to focus on besides just talking. Even just doing some stretches near a red chair before rehearsal could spark a conversation and lead to a joint fitness outing down the line.
The key is to find shared interests and create opportunities for interaction outside the main 'event' (like rehearsals). It doesn't have to be grand; often, the small, consistent efforts are what build the strongest friendships. What are your go-to activities for getting to know new people better and making those friendships stick?
Lwk js say “hey you’re really pretty!!!! What’s your next class? Oh! Well let’s get to know each other more! You seem really cool!!!” but not like that I’m Les and all but I mean talk as a friend
