This Pokemon Crystal cartridge is 25 years old and it still runs. I just swapped out the dead battery and played the whole thing through again, twice!
Released in the US in 2001, Pokemon Crystal was the first Pokémon game with animated sprites (when you encountered a Pokémon, it actually moved). This was revolutionary back in 2001. Gold and Silver didn't do that. It was also the first game where you could start the game as a girl character.
I remember walking into Toys R Us to buy this indigo Game Boy Color and Pokemon Blue back in 1999. Then I got Yellow, then Silver, then in the summer of 2001, buying aCrystal.
Chasing Entei, Raikou, and Suicune around the map all over again was such a rush (Suicune’s my favorite legendary).
I’d love to see this game reimagined as an open-world Nintendo Switch game (or even as-is on switch). Until then, catch me on my Game Boy.
