i used to lie in bed telling myself i was fine while my body acted like something terrible was about to happen. that mismatch made me feel even worse.

i tried body scans, cold water on my wrists, and writing lists before bed. they were not useless. they just did not work when i was already bracing.

i was googling "how to stop overthinking in a relationship" and "how to manage anxiety in relationships" because my anxiety always picked the same hour to bring up every fear.

what finally made sense was that my brain was not failing me. my body was stuck in alert mode and my brain was trying to give the alarm a reason.

if i was insecure, journaling kept me in the story. if i was sad and needy, a walk changed nothing. if i was hypervigilant, meditation made every sound feel louder. i needed to stop guessing and start reading the state underneath it.

my therapist called it daily nervous system regulation. i found groundly and after that, and it felt like the first thing built for the version of me who was already activated, not the calm version who makes good choices.

now i can feel the difference between a real problem and a tired nervous system looking for one. that alone changed my nights.

start building a grounding ritual while you are calm enough to practice it. the anxious version of you deserves something ready when she shows up.

... Read moreFrom personal experience, managing anxiety and overthinking—especially at night—can feel overwhelming when your body is on constant alert. Traditional relaxation techniques like journaling or meditation sometimes fall short because they work best when you’re already calm. What helped me was building grounding rituals tailored for moments when my nervous system was activated, not when I was calm. One useful approach I found is warming the feet before bed using socks, a heating pad, or warm water. This simple step sends safety signals to your body, helping your mind to trust that it’s safe to relax. Also, humming—without worrying about how it sounds—creates soothing vibrations that calm the nervous system before anxious thoughts escalate. Another game-changer was the practice of doing one reset before touching the pillow. Apps like Groundly offer guided emotional release techniques that help soften my nervous system first so anxious thoughts don’t take over my bedtime routine. Instead of focusing on trying to fall asleep—something that felt like a pressure—I started focusing on feeling ‘heavy.’ Telling my body to sink rather than perform made relaxation much easier and often led to better sleep. Understanding that anxiety often stems from a tired nervous system searching for a problem was eye-opening. It helped me stop blaming my brain for overthinking and instead respond to the physical signals my body was sending. Building these grounding rituals during calm times made them accessible when anxiety flares appeared, ultimately transforming restless nights into more peaceful ones. If you struggle similarly, try preparing a small set of grounded, body-focused steps you can rely on during anxious moments. It’s about meeting your nervous system where it is and providing it the cues it needs to switch off the alarm. This mindset shift and practical routine might be exactly what you need to improve your nights and ease relationship-related anxieties.

my whole life i defined consistency as perfection. if i slipped up, missed a day, made a mistake, then in my head i “broke my streak” and had to start all over again (which is super discouraging) but consistency isn’t doing everything exactly right every day. it’s about showing up to the table -
