Learning tips from a world-class expert coach

Learning tips from a world-class expert coach

In our professional and personal lives, we often feel like we're running on a rat wheel, trying to run after new technologies and skills that can't get in the way. This feeling of being behind all the time misleads us that our basic problem is "not having time" or "IQ is not high enough."

But these beliefs are the mayacs that are the biggest obstacle to self-improvement. The real problem is not the lack of time or intelligence, but the lack of an effective learning process. This article has moderated some of the most surprising and powerful principles from Justin Sung, a learning coach with over 13 years of experience, to help you get out of the vicious circle and learn more effectively.

Thought 1: The feeling of difficulty is not a sign of failure, but a sign of progress.

The most common obstacle to learning is what researchers call the "Misinterpreted Effort Hypothesis." Most people believe that effective learning should feel easy and smooth. If any method feels difficult, confusing, or requires a lot of brain, we often assume that it does not work.

The truth is the opposite: the feeling of mental tension, the need to think harder to break through confusion, is a sign that your brain is working at a higher level. It is this deep involvement that leads to better memory and deeper understanding of material. The goal is not to spend more time working harder, but to intensify your thinking during the time you have. If you feel challenged, you are on the right track.

Thought 2: Stop responding to your own "Learning Style." It's a miracle.

The idea of "learning style" (for example, some people learn well by watching, listening, or acting) is a drug that does not die. Despite widespread teaching, decades of research have confirmed that our brains are not built for a particular style.

The reason why this belief persists is because it matches our experience of being more "liked" or comfortable with certain methods, but preference does not mean effective. In fact, everyone benefits from Mixed Modal Learning or using a variety of methods to process information. Relying on your favorite style is a major constraint. In the real world, you can't choose how information is presented. Being good at learning through various forms is a significant professional advantage.

Thought 3: To create lasting memories, "Retrieval" must be mastered first.

The learning system has two main components: Encoding (the process of bringing new information into the brain and connecting it to what it already knows) and Retrieval (the process of extracting that information).

High-quality coding (e.g., finding a patter, modeling ideas) is the most important life-changing skill in long-term memory formation, but it is very difficult and time-consuming to train. This therefore leads to a counter-sentient conclusion: you should first emphasize the practice of information retrieval to master.

The reason is that retrieval skills (such as self-testing) can be learned quickly and yield results immediately. Relying only on retrieval without good encryption is like pushing a mortar up a mountain ready to flow back down, but training to retrieve data will block your results first, preventing forgetting, as you slowly build advanced encryption skills behind the scenes. This will insure performance first and then increase effectiveness later.

Thought 4: You don't have a time management problem. You have a "prioritization" problem.

The feeling that "not enough time" is hardly a time issue, but 99% is a task management and prioritization issue. Most people fall into a "urgency trap," spending all their time on a task that feels urgent, but neglecting activities that are truly important to the long term.

The solution is to reverse the entire planning process using the Eisenhower Matrix, which divides the work into 4 groups:

Focus: urgent & important (immediately done)

Deadline: Not urgent & important (Most life-changing jobs will be in this niche)

Made into Sets: Urgent & Unimportant (Hurry to Finish Arrangement in Groups)

Delete: Not Urgent & Not Important (Brutally Disposed)

Before you look at urgent tasks, you need to schedule and protect the time for "important but not urgent" targets (box 2). This is the only way to break this vicious circle.

Thought 5: The secret to advanced concentration is to learn to be "bored."

We often believe that deep concentration relies on apps, productivity or shortcuts, but sustained concentration is not a trick, it is a practicable mental skill, procrastination, the archenemy of concentration, is not laziness, but an emotional mechanism to avoid the awkwardness of difficult tasks.

Building long-term concentration requires practicing three mental skills:

Train to be good at "living with boredom": Boredom is the direct antidote to dopamine addiction in modern times, where we seek distractions all the time. It is a healthy state for the brain to gather information and build insight. Practice sitting still without doing anything to build the muscles of concentration.

Train to be good at "starting difficult things": The mental resistance to starting difficult tasks is often the biggest obstacle. Take advantage of the Zeigarnik effect (the need for the brain to complete overlapping tasks). The goal is not to complete the task, but to "just start doing it for two minutes." Often, that's enough to generate momentum.

Train to be good at "pulling your mind back": Your mind is distracted. The key skill is not to prevent your mind from drifting, but to realize it as it drifts, and then slowly bring your attention back to it. This action is like lifting a weight to build your concentration muscles.

Conclusion: From Consumers to Proactive Learners

Effective learning is not a matter of raw talent or devoting more time on a rat wheel pedaling a machine, but it is the direct result of embracing better principles and more strategic processes. With changes that go against these feelings - embracing mental hardship, abandoning the reassuring mayacti, prioritizing what really matters, and learning to live with boredom - you turn yourself from a consumer of informed information to a highly effective proactive learner.
