signs you’re AI-led, not vibe coding | The 2026 AI builder checklist 🪺
TL;DR: Andrej Karpathy coined “vibe coding” in 2025. In early 2026 he called the term passé and introduced agentic engineering. Here’s how to tell which one you’re actually doing.
⌁
Quick definitions:
Vibe coding: Describe what you want in plain English. Accept what the AI gives you. Don’t read the code. Don’t fix what’s broken. Ship.
Agentic engineering (or AI-led building): Same plain-English prompts. But you direct the AI, review every output, ask why things break, iterate, and ship the version that holds up.
⌁
The 5-sign checklist. If you do 3 of these, you’re AI-led:
✦ Sign 1: You read what the AI gave you.
Not skimmed. Not trusted. Actually read it. If you can’t explain what the code does, you can’t ship it confidently.
✦ Sign 2: You wrote a second prompt because the first one wasn’t right.
Vibe coders accept the first output. AI-led builders iterate until it actually works. The second prompt is the single biggest habit that separates the two.
✦ Sign 3: You said “let’s plan first” before “let’s build.”
Ask first. Build second. The AI is dramatically better at building things you’ve already thought through. The plan is the work.
✦ Sign 4: You tested the thing you were afraid would break.
Vibe coders skip this. The thing you don’t want to test is usually the thing most likely to fail.
✦ Sign 5: You knew when to stop refining and ship.
The hardest one. The first prompt gets you 90% of the way. The last 10% takes 90% of the time. Knowing when “good” beats “perfect” is the AI-led skill that takes the longest to develop.

The numbers behind why this matters:
⌁ 92% of US developers now use AI coding tools daily
⌁ 46% of all new code on GitHub is AI-generated (April 2026)
⌁ Searches for “vibe coding” up 2,400% since January 2025
⌁ AI-generated code is 1.7× more likely to have major issues — when no one reviews it
⌁ ~45% of AI-generated code contains potential security vulnerabilities
Vibe coding ships the first version. AI-led builds the right one.
