What kind of creative hobbies do you have that you feel your ADHD meshes well with?

Lots of people with ADHD tend to create crochet, knitted, and sewing projects. I’ve seen a lot of ADHD creatives work on 3-D items, such as resin art and sculptures.

I’m currently taking a free course for a diploma in fashion design, just because I’m taking a break from college and I do not have a full-time job.

I didn’t realize that I would like fashion design so much seeing as I just took the free course on a whim. However here are some pictures I found for spring summer 2024, and then three designs I made based off of the trends.

The first two slides are photos from a fashion museum, the third slide is the blurred lines trend, and the last slide is my rough design.

Like many of you, I used to think my ADHD was just a series of challenges, but diving into fashion design has really shown me how it can be a true superpower. That hyperfocus we sometimes get? It's incredible for diving deep into a design concept, researching historical fashion pieces in a virtual 'fashion museum,' or meticulously sketching out 'striped and textured patterns' for a new collection. For me, the initial spark often comes from something unexpected. Just like taking that free fashion design course on a whim, sometimes the most spontaneous ideas lead to the most exciting projects. My mind is constantly buzzing with ideas, and fashion design provides a fantastic outlet for that. I find that when I'm working on new 'fashion illustrations,' my brain loves to connect seemingly unrelated concepts, which is perfect for interpreting abstract trends like Spring/Summer 2024's 'blurred lines' into wearable art. It allows for a fresh, unconventional perspective that can really make a design stand out. Of course, it's not always easy. The challenge of staying organized or seeing a long-term project through can be real. What I've found helpful is breaking down big design projects into smaller, manageable chunks. Instead of thinking about an entire collection, I focus on one garment, or even just a specific detail like a sleeve or a collar. This helps keep the overwhelm at bay and allows me to leverage my ability to 'sprint' on tasks. Using visual aids, mood boards, and even digital tools to organize my thoughts helps immensely, turning potential chaos into a structured creative flow. Another thing that helps is creating an environment that supports my creative process. I love having different textures and colors around me – it’s like constant visual stimulation that feeds my imagination. Visiting physical or even virtual 'fashion museums' online has also been a huge source of inspiration. Seeing how designers throughout history have approached textile use and silhouette can spark so many ideas for contemporary pieces. The historical garments, often featuring intricate details and unique structures, inspire my own 'fashion illustrations' that incorporate modern twists. Embracing the sensory aspects of fashion, from the feel of fabrics to the visual impact of a flowing silhouette, is something my ADHD brain truly thrives on. This sensitivity can translate into very rich and engaging designs. It’s about channeling that energy and those unique perspectives into something tangible and beautiful. If you're an aspiring fashion designer with ADHD, don't be afraid to lean into what makes your brain unique. Your ability to think outside the box, to see connections others might miss, and to approach problems with a fresh perspective can be your greatest assets. Embrace the chaos, find systems that work for you (not necessarily what everyone else does), and let your unique vision come to life.
