As a trained LMT, I am often asked “is Gua Sha for real?” or “does lymphatic drainage actually help my skin?” And my professional and medical answer is YES. As a board certified LMT I have been trained in lymphatic drainage AND eastern medicine theory. The infographic above is from what I learned and was made for a client of mine who said I should share this with others.

Lymphatic drainage on the face has become so popular- let’s ensure we are doing it properly!!

⭐️

Always begin at the collarbone before working on your face. The collarbone (clavicle) area contains major lymph nodes where fluid ultimately drains, so opening this pathway first allows the fluid from your face to have somewhere to go. Use gentle pumping or circular motions at the base of your neck for 30–60 seconds

1. 🌊 Reduces Puffiness & Swelling

Lymphatic drainage moves excess fluid buildup out of tissues, directly reducing puffiness in the face, under-eyes, hands, and ankles. It’s one of the fastest-working techniques for that “depuffed” morning glow.

2. 🛡️ Strengthens Your Immune System

Your lymphatic system transports white blood cells throughout the body to fight infection. Regular drainage helps your body process up to 10x more lymph fluid than normal, increasing lymphocyte production and your ability to fight off colds and viruses.

3. ✨ Promotes Clearer, Healthier Skin

Stagnant lymph fluid contributes to skin issues like acne, dryness, and dullness. Improving lymph flow supports detoxification at the skin level, giving you improved circulation and a natural, healthy glow.

4. 🧠 Clears Brain Fog & Boosts Energy

A sluggish lymphatic system is directly linked to fatigue, brain fog, and headaches. Stimulating lymph flow helps flush out the waste products and excess proteins that contribute to that heavy, cloudy feeling — leaving you feeling lighter and more energized.

5. 😌 Activates Deep Relaxation

The gentle, rhythmic motions of lymphatic drainage activate the parasympathetic nervous system — your “rest and digest” mode. This makes it a powerful stress-relief and sleep-support tool, especially valuable after a hectic week or intense workout.

... Read moreIncorporating lymphatic drainage into your daily routine has been a game-changer for me, especially as someone who experiences frequent facial puffiness and seasonal allergies. One simple approach I use is starting every session by placing two fingers at the base of my ears and gently pumping in small circles. This helps to open up drainage pathways and encourages fluid movement. Using feather-light pressure during massage is crucial since the lymph vessels lie just beneath the skin; pressing too hard can actually impede flow. For instance, I trace my fingertips along the sides of my nose up to the brow bone with gentle pulsing pressure, repeating this five times to relieve sinus congestion and support clearer sinuses. Hydration also plays a vital role—drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps keep lymph fluid moving smoothly. After applying these techniques consistently, I noticed significantly less swelling around my eyes in the mornings and an overall boost in energy levels. The rituals feel calming, activating my parasympathetic nervous system and reducing stress, especially after a demanding day. If you’re new to lymphatic drainage, a warm compress before massage further enhances effectiveness by relaxing tissues. Elevating your head during these sessions can also help promote fluid drainage. These small adjustments combined with gentle, rhythmic motions create a holistic approach that nurtures your body's natural detox processes. Ultimately, lymphatic drainage is not only about physical benefits but also an act of self-care that strengthens your immune response and improves skin vitality. It might take a few weeks of regular practice to experience full effects, but the visible reduction in puffiness and boosted clarity in how I feel make it worth the effort.
