... Read moreOur family trip to the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago was truly unforgettable, especially since we focused on finding all the amazing interactive exhibits perfect for my little ones! If you're planning a visit with kids, you absolutely have to check out a few of our favorites that make learning an adventure. One of the biggest hits was the Human Body exhibit. It might sound a bit complex, but seeing that transparent anatomy model up close was fascinating for everyone. They have stations where kids can learn about different organs and even do some hands-on activities that make understanding biology super fun and not at all intimidating. My kids loved pressing buttons and seeing how different body parts work – it’s a fantastic way to spark curiosity about human science! Another standout was the 'Science Storms' exhibit. While the large robot we saw mentioned in the OCR was taking a break, this area is usually packed with incredible interactive displays about tornadoes, tsunamis, and even avalanches. Watching the giant tornado funnel form right before your eyes is truly mesmerizing and educational. It's a fantastic way to introduce physics and natural phenomena in a really engaging, hands-on way that captures their imagination. For kids who love technology and history, the 'Numbers in Nature: A Mirror Maze' provides a visually stunning and fun interactive experience. We also found the vintage tech displays, like the old Atari joystick and console, incredibly cool. It sparked some great conversations about how much technology has changed! Imagine showing your kids how people used to game, or explaining the Gilbert Atomic Energy Lab kit – a real blast from the past that shows the history of scientific exploration and innovation. The 'Yesterday's Main Street' also offers a unique walk through history, with immersive storefronts that transport you back in time. Don't miss the 'Coal Mine' experience; it's a simulated descent into a real coal mine, which is surprisingly captivating and informative. It’s an immersive experience that really makes history come alive, and kids often find the ride and the dark tunnels a thrilling adventure. The transportation exhibits, featuring impressive displays like the vintage 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom, also captivate young minds, showing the evolution of engineering and design. You can often find smaller interactive stations near these large artifacts, allowing kids to learn about the mechanics behind them. To make the most of your visit, I'd highly recommend checking the museum's website for daily scheduled activities and demonstrations. They often have live science shows that are fantastic for all ages and add another layer of interaction. Also, pack some snacks or plan for lunch in advance, as exploring all these interactive wonders can really work up an appetite! Wear comfy shoes, because you'll be doing a lot of walking. We spent a full day there and still felt like we could have explored more. It’s definitely one of the top things to do in Chicago for families looking for both fun and learning!
