This pregnancy humbled me in ways I didn’t expect. I dealt with high blood pressure for the first time in my life. I developed my first case of preeclampsia. I was induced early. And after a long labor that pushed every limit I had, I ended up in my first C Section recovery. Nothing about that was easy. Nothing about it felt familiar.
And then there’s the comparison trap. You see moms online who waited to have babies in their 30s and they make it look fabulous. Perfect hair. Perfect outfits. Walking around on day ten like postpartum recovery is a slow Sunday stroll. Meanwhile my baby couldn’t latch, I was dealing with phlebitis, holding a heating pad to my engorged chest, wondering why my own healing journey felt like climbing a mountain while theirs looked effortless.
It is a special kind of pain to be deep in your postpartum journey and wonder what you’re doing wrong. But the truth is you are doing nothing wrong. Every pregnancy is different. Every postpartum body is unique.
Postpartum hormones, exhaustion, C Section healing, breastfeeding challenges, mental health, all of it shows up differently for every woman.

What part of your postpartum journey surprised you the most?
Having a baby in your 30s presents a range of challenges and experiences that differ significantly from earlier pregnancies. It's important to understand that pregnancies can change with age, and the body may respond differently, even if you've had children before. High blood pressure and preeclampsia are more common risks as maternal age increases, which can lead to early induction and require additional medical intervention such as C Section deliveries. Postpartum recovery in your 30s can also feel overwhelming and unfamiliar. Hormonal fluctuations, breastfeeding difficulties like latching issues, and complications such as phlebitis can impact healing and emotional well-being. Many women struggle with the comparison trap on social media, where other moms may appear to handle postpartum life effortlessly. However, every postpartum journey is unique, and healing takes time—often far longer and with more hurdles than the idealized versions presented online. Balancing newborn care alongside other responsibilities and managing sleep deprivation can intensify the challenges, especially when combined with physical recovery after childbirth. It’s crucial to remember that mental health matters just as much as physical health during this period. Feelings of exhaustion, anxiety, or even postpartum depression are not uncommon and should be addressed with compassion and professional support if needed. Support networks—whether family, friends, or online communities—play a vital role in helping new mothers aged 30 and above feel connected and understood. Sharing authentic experiences, asking for help, and acknowledging the difficulties without guilt fosters resilience and eases the healing process. Ultimately, embracing the fact that every pregnancy and postpartum experience differs helps reduce pressure to meet preconceived expectations. Prioritizing self-care, realistic goals for recovery, and acceptance of the healing timeline are key to navigating the journey of having babies in your 30s.
