📚 Cardiac Nursing Notes: Understanding the Heart ❤️

📚 Cardiac Nursing Notes: Understanding the Heart ❤️

Hey fellow nursing students! So right now I’m in Med Surg Cardiac. I’ve been diving deep into cardiac nursing and wanted to share some of my notes. Hope these help with your studies! Feel free to comment with any questions or additional info!

1. Cardiac Anatomy & Physiology:

• Four chambers: Right & left atria, right & left ventricles.

• Valves: Tricuspid (right atrium to ventricle), Mitral (left atrium to ventricle), Pulmonary (right ventricle to pulmonary artery), Aortic (left ventricle to aorta).

• Circulation Pathway: Body ➡️ Right heart ➡️ Lungs ➡️ Left heart ➡️ Body.

2. Key ECG Waves:

• P wave: Atrial depolarization (atrial contraction).

• QRS complex: Ventricular depolarization (ventricular contraction).

• T wave: Ventricular repolarization (ventricles relax).

🔎 Pro-tip: Always pay close attention to the ST segment (elevation can indicate myocardial infarction!).

3. Common Cardiac Conditions:

• Myocardial Infarction (MI): Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, diaphoresis (sweating). Treatment: MONA (Morphine, Oxygen, Nitroglycerin, Aspirin).

• Heart Failure: Often categorized into left-sided (dyspnea, pulmonary congestion) and right-sided (peripheral edema, JVD).

4. Medications in Cardiac Care:

• Beta-blockers: Reduce heart rate, blood pressure (example: metoprolol).

• ACE inhibitors: Reduce blood pressure, improve heart function (example: lisinopril).

• Diuretics: Remove excess fluid (example: furosemide).

5. Nursing Interventions:

• Vital Signs Monitoring: BP, HR, O2 sats, especially during acute cardiac events.

• EKG Interpretation: Know how to spot changes like arrhythmias, ST elevation.

• Patient Education: Lifestyle changes (diet, exercise), medication adherence.

✨ Helpful Tip: Keep practicing your ECG interpretation and reviewing pharmacology—these are essentials for cardiac care!

Hope this helps! Stay strong, future Nurses! 🩺

... Read moreIn cardiac nursing, understanding the heart's anatomy and physiology is crucial. The heart consists of four chambers: the right and left atria, and the right and left ventricles. Each chamber plays a unique role in blood circulation, moving deoxygenated blood to the lungs and oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Key structures includes valves such as the tricuspid, mitral, pulmonary, and aortic valves, which ensure unidirectional blood flow. ECG interpretation is also a core component. Recognizing the P wave, QRS complex, and T wave is essential in monitoring cardiac health. Abnormalities may indicate serious conditions, such as myocardial infarctions or arrhythmias. Common cardiac conditions include myocardial infarction, often presenting with chest pain and shortness of breath, and heart failure, characterized by fluid retention and breathing difficulties. Prompt treatment with medications like beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics is essential for managing these conditions. Nursing interventions play a vital role, including vital signs monitoring and patient education on lifestyle changes. Comprehensive understanding and these practical skills are vital for success in cardiac nursing.
