One of the biggest lessons tennis taught me had nothing to do with tennis.
It was about what happens between points.
Not the winners.
Not the trophies.
Not the perfect shots.
But the moments in between.
In a match, you can hit an incredible shot and lose the next point.
You can make an unforced error and still go on to win.
The best players in the world understand something important:
The last point is over.
The next point is all that matters.
Life works the same way.
When we're in a rut, we often become historians.
We replay the missed opportunities.
The conversations we wish had gone differently.
The goals we haven't achieved.
The version of ourselves we thought we'd be by now.
But the inner game isn't about winning every point.
It's about returning to the present point.
Again.
And again.
And again.
A tennis match is rarely won because someone played perfectly.
It's won because someone stayed engaged long enough for momentum to change.
The same is true in our careers, relationships, businesses, and personal growth.
Momentum often looks invisible while it's happening.
Until one day it isn't.
If you're in a rut today, remember:
You don't need to win the entire match this week.
You don't need to solve the next five years.
You don't need to feel motivated before you move.
You only need to play the next point.
Take the next call.
Write the next page.
Send the next email.
Have the next conversation.
The inner game is learning not to be defined by the last point.
Because every point is a chance to begin again.
What's one "next point" you're focusing on right now?
