We live in a world obsessed with quick fixes.

The perfect morning routine.

The perfect investment.

The perfect business strategy.

The one book that will change everything.

But life rarely works that way.

One mental model I find particularly useful is introducing randomness.

If you always read the same kind of book, talk to the same kind of people, consume the same ideas, and make decisions using the same framework, your thinking becomes predictable.

Randomness creates collisions.

Read something outside your field.

Talk to someone who thinks completely differently.

Study biology if you're an investor.

Study psychology if you're an engineer.

Study history if you're building a company.

You never know which idea will connect with another idea you've been carrying for years.

Then there's another principle:

Take one concept seriously.

Don't collect mental models just to sound intelligent.

Take one useful idea and actually live it.

If you learn about incentives, start noticing incentives everywhere.

If you learn about opportunity cost, use it when deciding how to spend your time.

If you learn about compounding, apply it to your money, relationships, reputation, health, and skills.

A mental model becomes powerful when it changes your behaviour.

And here's where the magic happens.

Mental models compound.

One useful idea might improve one decision.

Ten useful ideas might change the way you approach a career.

A lifetime of useful ideas can fundamentally change how you see the world.

The problem is that compounding is boring in the beginning.

There is no dramatic transformation.

No overnight success.

Just small improvements.

Repeated.

For years.

That's why people keep searching for the next shortcut.

They underestimate what happens when you simply become 1% wiser in how you think and act, year after year.

You don't need 100 new ideas this week.

Find one.

Understand it deeply.

Apply it.

Then expose yourself to something completely different.

Over time, those ideas begin interacting.

And eventually, you discover something that no single mental model could have given you:

better judgment.

So if you're looking for a quick fix today, perhaps don't look for another answer.

Look for a better way of thinking.

Then give it enough time to compound.

What mental model has changed the way you make decisions?

... Read moreIn my experience, the power of randomness and mental models truly comes to life when you commit to exploring ideas outside your normal routine. For example, when I started deliberately reading about fields unrelated to my career—such as philosophy and biology—it sparked unexpected connections that enhanced my problem-solving abilities. One habit I adopted was taking just one mental model, like opportunity cost or incentives, and applying it consistently in daily decisions. This focus helped me become more mindful about managing my time and resources, which gradually led to better outcomes personally and professionally. A key insight I gained was that mental models are not just abstract concepts to collect but tools to live by. Just like Warren Buffett emphasizes compounding wealth by making small improvements steadily, compounding better thinking patterns through repeated application delivers profound change over years. It’s also important to expose yourself to different perspectives intentionally. Conversations with people holding contrasting viewpoints create a mental collision that challenges rigid beliefs and fosters novel ideas. This randomness disrupts predictability and fuels creativity. The journey isn’t glamorous. There’s no overnight epiphany, but steady incremental gains that build a foundation for better judgment. Over time, the interaction of multiple mental models develops a nuanced worldview, helping to navigate complex decisions with more clarity and confidence. If you’re seeking quick fixes, shifting focus toward cultivating your thinking process and embracing uncertainty might be the more satisfying path. Patience with the compounding process turns simple, well-understood mental models into powerful guides for decision-making throughout life.

Ever wondered what it feels like to live beneath the ocean? The Muraka at Conrad Maldives is more than a villa, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Two levels of pure indulgence: an overwater residence above, and a private underwater suite below, where the Indian Ocean becomes your living art. Wa
