Baby bottle sterilizer turned rusty 😨

As we are still in the midst of waiting for our house, hubs and I stay over at my in-laws place over the weekend.

This sterilizer was a freebie that we won from the TMC seminar & I was horrified to see that the base had a few points that started turning rusty. I believe this was due to abrasion of the legs of the rack & the base of the sterilizer. Water might have played a part as well as there will always be a bit of water that drips to the bottom when loading bottles/pump parts.

We’ve only used this for 2 days a week for 2.5 months so it is really quite under utilised.

And for maintenance wise, I will always do a wipe down every single week before leaving my in-laws place hence really shock to see that the sterilizer turned rusty and had a slight metal smell.

As we got this from a hospital & also seen this brand (Enve) at events like Mummy’s Market, we thought that it was usable as we just needed an extra sterilizer over at my in-laws place over the weekends.

Let me just add that this steriliser can only hold 3 bottles or 1 pump & 1 bottle per load which is a really small capacity for a sterilizer with such a big outlook :(

I would rate this a 1/10 due to the space & the quality. Disappointed! 😭

... Read moreFrom my personal experience with baby bottle sterilizers, rust formation can often sneak up even when using the device sparingly, as in this case with just two days a week of use over two and a half months. The sterilizer described is bronze in color and shows rust spots especially at the base due to the rubbing of the rack legs against it, combined with residual water settling at the bottom. This moisture exposure over time causes oxidation, which is why even hospital-given sterilizers or trusted brands like Enve can suffer. To prevent rust, I always recommend thoroughly drying the sterilizer components after every use. Water droplets left inside can foster early rust and unpleasant metallic odors. Wiping down the unit weekly is a good habit, but ensuring that the sterilizer is completely dry before storage is key. If your sterilizer has parts that rub or press against the base, adding small rubber or silicone pads under the legs can reduce abrasion damage. Capacity is also an important factor: sterilizers with a large exterior but small internal loading space, like the one mentioned that holds only three bottles or one pump and one bottle, can be inconvenient for busy parents. Look for sterilizers that balance size and capacity to meet your needs efficiently. Lastly, when you notice rust starting to form, consider whether it’s possible to replace the affected parts or if the sterilizer should be retired to avoid contamination. Using accessories like UV sterilization or steam sterilizers with corrosion-resistant materials might be a better choice for long-term use at multiple locations such as your main home and in-laws'. There’s nothing more important than ensuring your baby’s feeding equipment is safe, clean, and fresh every time.
