To look out for with autistic breakdowns

2024/4/28 Edited to

... Read moreNavigating the world with autism means learning to recognize and respond to my body's unique signals, especially when it comes to autistic shutdowns and meltdowns. While often used interchangeably, understanding the nuances between them has been incredibly helpful for me and my support system. Based on my experience and what I’ve learned, meltdowns are typically an external explosion of overwhelmed emotions – think yelling, crying, or lashing out, sometimes accompanied by self-injurious stimming or intense pacing. It's often a high-energy, uncontrolled release of all the accumulated sensory and emotional input. In contrast, an autistic shutdown feels more internal, like my system is going offline. It's characterized by a significant drop in energy, often leading to an inability to move, dissociation, or a strong urge to isolate. I might go nonverbal, experience slower processing, or just stare into space, feeling utterly 'stuck.' My body might feel heavy, and I might become clumsy, or my face might take on a blank expression. Both states, however, share common threads like losing the ability to mask, difficulty focusing, and heightened sensory distress. Recognizing these distinct and overlapping characteristics is the first step towards managing them effectively. For anyone looking for ways to navigate or 'get out of' an autistic shutdown, I've found a few strategies that genuinely help. The primary goal is to drastically reduce demands and stimuli. This often means finding a quiet, dark space where I can be alone without judgment. I might need to lie down or just sit in silence. Sometimes, gentle stimming, like hugging myself or using a weighted blanket, can offer comfort. Communication becomes incredibly difficult, so allowing for non-verbal cues or simple, clear 'yes/no' questions from others is vital. It’s not about snapping out of it, but gently guiding my system back to a calmer state. Allowing myself to zone out or just be still, without pressure, is key. When it comes to meltdowns, the approach shifts. While it feels chaotic, the underlying need is often similar: to release overwhelming input. For me, creating a safe space where I can express the intense emotions without harm or judgment is crucial. This might involve allowing myself to cry, shake, or pace until the intensity subsides. I've learned that during a meltdown, I definitely do not want to be touched or have too many questions directed at me. Someone simply being present, ensuring my safety, and minimally intervening can be the most supportive action. It’s about letting the wave pass while having a safe harbor. Understanding 'what is level 1 autism' has also shed light on why these experiences can be particularly intense for many adults. Often, individuals with Level 1 autism are highly adept at masking their autistic traits to fit into neurotypical environments. This constant masking is incredibly draining and can lead to severe exhaustion, making one more susceptible to shutdowns or meltdowns. When the 'losing ability to mask' warning sign appears, it's a critical indicator that my system is overloaded. Recognizing this has allowed me to be kinder to myself, understand my limits, and advocate for my needs before I reach a breaking point. It’s a journey of self-discovery and self-compassion.

Emotional burnout is often mislabeled as laziness, especially in adults who are used to pushing through. Burnout isn’t about a lack of discipline. It’s about prolonged stress without recovery. Productivity struggles are usually a symptom, not the root problem. Rest helps, but so does reducing emo
