私も錦蝶（きんちょう）を育てていて、その繁殖力の強さには驚かされました。最初は観葉植物として可愛らしい斑点模様の葉を楽しんでいましたが、1メートル以上に伸びて枯れてしまったと思ったら、真っ赤な花が咲いて感動しました。 しかし、この植物の子株は本当に強烈で、葉先の不定芽がポロポロ落ちてはすぐに根を張り、あっという間に広がってしまいます。何度も根から抜いても 、子株が土の中で生き延びてまた成長するため、放置すると庭が錦蝶でいっぱいになってしまいます。私の場合は、ゴミ袋を用意してこまめに引き抜きながら管理しています。 錦蝶は「子宝草」という別名の通り、子孫繁栄のお守りとしても知られていますが、実際にはその繁殖力の高さから庭のスペースを取られたり、周囲の植物への影響が心配になることも。特に初心者や狭い家庭菜園で育てる場合は、鉢植えなどで殖やしすぎない工夫が必要です。 また、花が咲くまで育てると意外と見応えがあり、真っ赤な花が庭のアクセントになります。錦蝶はマダガスカル原産で暑さや乾燥に強い多肉植物なので、夏場の管理も比較的楽です。ただし、子株の拡散には十分注意しましょう。 私の経験から言うと、錦蝶を育てる際は定期的に株の整理をして、子株が増えすぎないよう管理することが鍵です。根気よく手間をかければ、庭に鮮やかな花とかわいい緑が楽しめる素敵な植物です。
