今回の展示、ただ「かわいい〜」で終わらなくて、“さかなのひみつ”が自然に頭に入ってくるのが良かったです。イルミネーションで雰囲気がある分、つい水槽を眺めがちなんだけど、名前の由来や体のしくみを意識すると面白さが一段上がりました。 まず、クモウツボ。岩のすき間から顔だけ出してる姿ってちょっと怖いのに、近くで見ると表情が意外とゆるくてクセになります。ウツボの仲間は「隠れて待つ」タイプが多くて、体をくねらせて泳ぐより、穴の中でじっとしてチャンスを待つのが得意。口を開け閉めしているのは威嚇というより“呼吸”の動きに見えることもあって、そこが誤解されやすいひみつだなと思いました。 コンゴウフグは、見た目の可愛さと「毒がある」というギャップがまさにひみつ。フグの毒は種類や部位で違うことが多いので、見た目が小さくても油断ならない…って知るだけで、水槽の中の存在感が変わりました。小さい体で強気に見える動きも「自分を大きく見せる」生存戦略なのかな、と勝手に想像。 トランスルーセントグラスキャットフィッシュは、透明な体がいちばんのひみつポイント。光の当たり方で内側が透けて見えて、群れで泳ぐと“線”みたいに見える瞬間があって見入ってしまいました。こういう透明系の魚は、外敵から見つかりにくくするためのカモフラージュとも言われるので、イルミネーションの色が変わる空間だと観察しがいがあります。 チンアナゴは、砂から出たり引っ込んだりするのが可愛くてずっと見ていられる…。実は全身が出ている時間は意外と短くて、危険を感じるとすぐ砂の中へ。だから「しっぽまで見たい」と思ってもなかなか見せてくれないのがひみつです。近づきすぎず、少し離れて静かに待つと、ゆらゆらタイムが長くなる気がしました。 最後にタツノオトシゴ。オスが育児するって知識は有名だけど、実物を見ると“袋”の存在がリアルでびっくりします。しかも泳ぎが得意じゃないから、尾でサンゴに巻き付いて固定するのも重要なひみつ。イルミネーションの青い光だと輪郭がきれいに出て、写真も撮りやすかったです。 こうやって一つひとつの「ひみつ」を意識すると、展示が“図鑑のページ”みたいに立体的になります。次に行くなら、気になった生き物を2〜3匹だけ決めて、看板の説明→動き→体の特徴の順に見るのがおすすめです。
