You can create a very simple HOUNDSTOOTH STITCH by doing the following, using two (2) contrasting or coordinating colors of yarn:
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Create a Slip Knot in Color 1, then make a chain of Single Crochet (SC) stitches in an even number to create the appropriate width of your scarf or afghan.
2. When you have the correct width of your project, turn your work to create the 2nd Row by making a Double Crochet (DC) stitch in the 3rd stitch from your hook (not counting the stitch on your hook). Follow this with a Single Crochet (SC) stitch.
3. Repeat this sequence of 2 stitches (DC, SC) for the rest of Row 2. At the end of Row 2, pick up Color 2, and carry Color 1, placing your stitches over Color 1 yarn until you swap colors again at the end of this Row.
4. You should end Row 2 on a SC stitch in the last stitch. Switch back to Color 1, carrying Color 2 now. Chain 1 (in Color 1) and turn your work.
5. Still using Color 1 and carrying Color 2, work over the yarn of Color 2, hiding it within the stitches of Color 1. For Row 3 you will be reversing the order of the stitches, making a SC stitch on top of the DC stitch that you ended Row 2 with. Then make a DC on top of that next SC of Row 2. Repeat this sequence of stitches, being sure you always make a SC on top of the DC, and a DC on top of the SC.
6. Your last stitch for Row 3 will then be a DC. Drop Color 1, and pick Color 2 back up. Chain 2 and turn your work, carrying Color 1, and make a SC on top of that last DC. Repeat Row 2's sequence of DC then SC, again making sure to alternate and reverse the order of the stitches of the previous Row.
COMMENTS
1. This stitch will work with any thickness of yarn/fiber. Use the hook that is recommended on the label of your yarn/fiber.
2. When you've completed a Row, your turning chain stitch will be 1 stitch if you're going to start that next Row with a Single Crochet stitch, but it will be 2 chain stitches if your 1st stitch on the new Row will be a Double Crochet stitch.
3. One side will have Color 1 prominent, and the flip side will have Color 2 more prominent.
4. Each Row's stitches are worked in reverse order of the previous Row.
