Visiting Mexico 🇲🇽 Learning to speak Spanish 🫶
My family of several generations has deeply rooted ancestry, not only from Mexico but also from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. My family has lived in history for many years from both sides. An interesting fact is that my dad was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States, where he became a citizen.
I grew up in a Mexican American household, although my dad and his side of the family often spoke to me in Spanish during my childhood years, while most of my other family mainly spoke English. Unfortunately, I grew up speaking little Spanish, although I was able to understand and pick up Spanish more than speaking throughout my life. As I have gotten older, I am starting to speak more Spanish, but I am in the process of learning to speak more to communicate with others. I am not only learning this skill but also learning to speak it for my dad's mom, my grandma.

It's incredible how many of us, growing up in Mexican American households, find ourselves in a similar boat – understanding so much but struggling to speak. My own journey to learn Spanish has been so rewarding, and I wanted to share some of the things that have truly helped me in practicing to speak more Spanish and connecting with my Mexican heritage language. I began by listening to Mexican music and podcasts – not just for entertainment, but actively trying to catch phrases and pronunciation. There are so many fantastic artists and storytellers from Mexico, and immersing myself in their sounds has been a natural way to absorb the rhythm of the language. Another game-changer was finding language exchange partners. Online platforms make it so easy to connect with native Spanish speakers from Mexico who are learning English. It’s a win-win! We practice with each other, and it builds confidence in a low-stakes environment. Plus, I've learned so much about Mexican culture directly from them, which makes the language even richer. I also started watching Mexican TV shows and movies with Spanish subtitles, then eventually without. It’s amazing how quickly your ear adapts. Shows like 'La Casa de las Flores' or classic Mexican cinema not only entertain but also expose you to different accents and colloquialisms that you wouldn't find in a textbook. This really helps when you're trying to understand the nuances of the 'mexican language' as it's spoken every day. For those of us with family who speak Spanish, don't underestimate the power of simply engaging them. Even if it's just a few words at first, try to speak with your grandparents, aunts, or uncles. They often cherish the effort and are the most patient teachers. I've found that my grandma absolutely lights up when I try to converse with her in Spanish, even if I stumble. It's a beautiful way to honor our heritage and strengthen family bonds. Finally, I've found that setting small, achievable goals keeps me motivated. Maybe it's learning five new verbs a week, or having a 10-minute all-Spanish conversation with a friend. Every little step forward builds momentum. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the joy of being able to communicate more deeply with my roots through the Mexican language is truly priceless. Keep practicing, keep listening, and don't be afraid to make mistakes – that's how we grow!
