「パッチワークとは？」を私なりに一言でいうと、“色や柄の違う布（はぎれ）をつなぎ合わせて、ひとつの布＝作品に仕立てる手芸”です。最初は小さな布の集合体なのに、つなげていくうちにちゃんと形になっていくのが気持ちよくて、気づくと机の上に布と糸とハサミが並ぶ時間が増えました。 はぎれ活用でまずおすすめなのは、失敗しても痛くない「小物」から。私が最初に作って達成感が大きかったのは、ピンクッション（針山）とコースターです。四角を数枚つないで、裏布をつけて返すだけでも“パッチワーク作品っぽさ”が出ます。次に、ミニポーチやペンケース。ファスナーが難しければ、巾着でもOK。小さい面積だと色柄の冒険もしやすいです。 「かわいいパッチワークパターン」を探している人には、初心者でも形が崩れにくいパターンから入るのがおすすめです。たとえば、 ・四角つなぎ（シンプルで布選びが主役） ・半分正方形三角形（HST：三角の組み合わせで表情が出る） ・ログキャビン（細長い布で作れて、はぎれ消費が早い） このあたりは布の向きや色の並べ方で一気に印象が変わるので、「同じ型紙なのに別物になる」面白さを体感しやすいです。 ミシンで作れるもの一覧的に考えるなら、パッチワークは“つなぎ”だけミシンにすると一気にラクになります。私がやってよかった流れは、①はぎれをざっくりアイロンで整える→②同じ幅にカット（定規＋ロータリーカッターがあると早い）→③ミシンで縫って縫い代をアイロンで割る（または片倒し）→④最後の仕立て（バッグ、クッションなど）。バッグにするなら、接着キルト芯を貼るとペラペラになりにくく、手作り感がきれいに出ました。 色柄合わせに迷ったときは、私の場合「ベースになる色を1つ決める」とまとまりました。たとえばピンク系を主役にして、柄物は2〜3種類まで、無地を混ぜて休ませる。逆にカラフルにするなら、同じトーン（くすみ系／原色系）で揃えるとごちゃつきにくいです。並べた状態をスマホで白黒撮影すると、明暗バランスが見えて配置替えがしやすいのも便利でした。 最後に、思い出の布を使うときは“全部を使わない”のがコツでした。お気に入りほど切るのに勇気がいるので、ワンポイントとして1〜2枚混ぜるだけでも十分特別になります。小さなはぎれが、バッグやハート型クッションみたいな形になって残るのはやっぱりうれしいです。
