This poem explores the emotional fatigue of modern dating, highlighting the cycle of hope, vulnerability, and eventual disappointment. It captures the exhaustion of seeking connection, only to face rejection, ghosting, and the pain of building walls to protect a fragile heart from further heartbreak and longing.

THE SCROLL AND THE SIGH:

Another profile, another curated lie,

A dopamine hit, then a quiet sigh.

We meet as strangers playing parts,

Guarded souls with fragile hearts.

The chemistry sparks, a flickering flame,

Then fades to silent, the modern game.

I wore my hope like a brand new dress,

Now it’s just wrinkled, a tangled mess.

The ghost in my inbox, the "seen" but no reply,

Leaves me questioning the reasons why.

Tired of the surface, the pretense and the pose,

Where love goes to wither, like autumn leaves, it goes.

My heart is on crutches, limping along,

Waiting for a melody, a different song.

So I’ll put up the walls, let the barriers stay,

And watch the potential just drift away.

A silent, slow, and familiar pain,

Dancing in the dating rain.

... Read moreIn today’s fast-paced digital dating world, many people experience what feels like an endless loop of excitement followed by disappointment. It’s common to start with hope—crafting the perfect profile, messaging with anticipation, and imagining a genuine connection—only to be met with ghosting, silence, or surface-level interactions. From personal experience, this rollercoaster can take a heavy toll on our emotional well-being. One thing I’ve learned is that the phrase “being with the wrong one is no better than being alone” often rings true. It’s better to embrace singlehood with peace than to settle for a relationship that leaves your heart on crutches. Learning to enjoy your own company and practicing self-love can be incredibly empowering. Interestingly, building walls to protect ourselves after repeated heartbreak is a natural response but can sometimes prevent us from fully healing. It’s important to balance self-protection with openness to new possibilities, even if they come slowly. Many find solace in communities or movements like #DatingMyself or #BeingSingle, which encourage embracing independence without pressure. Modern dating also involves coping with the dopamine hits from the endless scroll of profiles, which can become addictive and draining. Putting limits on time spent on dating apps and reconnecting with offline passions often helps restore emotional energy. Ultimately, the “silent, slow, and familiar pain” mentioned in the poem is a universal experience for many navigating love today. Recognizing these feelings and sharing stories can create support and understanding. Finding joy in solitude, learning from past experiences, and cultivating patience set the foundation for healthier relationships in the future. Remember, sometimes "being with no one" is a powerful space for growth and self-discovery before the right connection is found.
