Sick baby 😞

Last night was definitely one for the books. When my little one spiked a 103° fever that just wouldn't break, my heart sank. We were literally up all night, trying everything to get that temperature down and make him comfortable. Seeing your baby unwell is one of the hardest parts of parenthood, and when it’s a 7-month-old or even a 1-year-old, it feels extra scary because they can’t tell you what’s wrong. I remember looking at the clock and seeing 7:55 AM, knowing I had to sign into work, despite having absolutely no sleep. It felt impossible, but as moms, the show must go on, right? That sense of 'survival mode' kicks in, and you just push through. For anyone else navigating a sick 7-month-old with a fever, here are a few things I've learned that might help, based on my own experiences and what my pediatrician has advised. When to Worry & What to Do for a Baby's Fever: Temperature Check: Always use a rectal thermometer for the most accurate reading in infants. An oral, ear, or forehead thermometer might be convenient, but can be less reliable. Call the Doctor If: For a baby under 3 months, any fever (even low-grade) warrants an immediate call to the pediatrician. For a 7-month-old or 1-year-old, a 103° fever like my little one had, especially if it's not responding to medication or if your baby seems unusually lethargic, irritable, or has other concerning symptoms (like difficulty breathing, rash, or refusing to feed), definitely call. Medication: Always consult your doctor for correct dosages of infant acetaminophen or ibuprofen based on your baby's weight and age. Never give aspirin to babies. Comfort Measures: Lukewarm sponge baths can help bring down a fever, but avoid cold water or alcohol rubs. Dress your baby in light clothing to prevent overheating. Offer plenty of fluids (breast milk, formula, or water for babies over 6 months) to prevent dehydration. Coping When You're Exhausted and Your Baby is Sick: Ask for Help: This is huge. If you have a partner, family, or close friend, don't be afraid to ask them to take a shift so you can get an hour or two of uninterrupted sleep. Even a short nap can make a world of difference. Prioritize: When your baby is sick, everything else takes a backseat. Work emails can wait (mostly!), chores can wait. Focus on your little one and yourself. Hydrate & Nourish Yourself: It's easy to forget to eat and drink when you're stressed. Keep snacks and water nearby. Embrace the Cuddles: While it's tough, these moments of comforting your sick baby are also incredibly bonding. Snuggle up, watch a quiet show, or just rest together. It's incredibly challenging, but remember you're doing an amazing job. Every parent goes through these tough phases.
