Mango in Mexico
Oh my goodness, you guys! If you've ever been to Mexico, you know what I'm talking about when it comes to their mangoes. Before my trip, I thought a mango was just a mango, but boy, was I wrong! The sheer variety and incredible flavors I discovered were mind-blowing. It's truly a tropical paradise for mango lovers, and I just had to share my favorites and some tips from my delicious adventures. First up, you absolutely must try the Ataúlfo mango, often called the 'Honey Mango.' These are my absolute favorite! They're smaller, typically kidney-shaped, with a vibrant golden-yellow skin even when ripe. What I adore about them is their incredibly smooth, fiber-free flesh. It's so creamy and sweet, almost like honey, with a rich, buttery texture that melts in your mouth. You'll usually find these in abundance from March to July. They're perfect for just slicing and eating straight up! Then there's the Manila mango. These are probably the most common you'll see and are another fantastic choice, especially if you love a classic mango taste. They have a more elongated shape and turn a beautiful yellow when ripe. Their flesh is juicy, sweet, and also relatively fiber-free, making them super enjoyable. I found these to be incredibly versatile for everything from smoothies to fresh fruit salads during my springtime visit. For something a bit different, look out for the Haden mango. These are bigger, often rounder, with a beautiful blush of red, yellow, and green on their skin. The Haden has a richer, aromatic flavor with a slight tartness that balances its sweetness perfectly. It can have a bit more fiber than an Ataúlfo, but the taste is so robust and tropical. I remember enjoying a Haden mango by the beach – pure bliss! They're usually in season from April to June. Another popular one that's great for slicing is the Tommy Atkins. These are known for their firm flesh and long shelf life, making them a common export. They have a striking red and green skin. While they might not be as intensely sweet or fiber-free as an Ataúlfo, their mild, sweet flavor and firm texture make them excellent for dicing into salsas or adding to a fruit platter where you want pieces that hold their shape. You'll often see these from March to July. And don't forget the Kent mango! These are another large, oval variety with a dark green skin that often has a red blush. What makes the Kent special is its exceptionally juicy, tender flesh with very little fiber and a wonderfully sweet, rich flavor. They're fantastic for purees and drinks because of how much juice they yield. I loved making fresh mango juice with these – so refreshing! Their season typically runs from June to August. How to pick the perfect mango? Don't just rely on color! A ripe mango will usually have a slight give when gently squeezed, similar to an avocado. It should also have a fragrant, sweet aroma near the stem. Avoid ones with soft spots or wrinkled skin, unless you're planning to use them immediately for a smoothie! Honestly, experiencing the diverse mango varieties in Mexico was one of the highlights of my trip. Whether you're making a vibrant salsa for tacos, blending up a frosty agua fresca, or just enjoying a perfectly ripe slice by itself, you're in for a treat. Next time you're there, make sure to dive into the world of Mexican mangoes – your taste buds will thank you!
