No contact info. Now what?

So I came back to my car and found this note under the wiper: “Sorry for denting your ride. Can’t afford to fix it. Just faking writing insurance info because people are watching.” Like, what even?

No name and no number, just a weird confession. Now my car’s got a scratch and this clown thinks a sarcastic note cuts it? I took pics of the damage and the note, then hit up the local PD. They said to file a hit and run report, even with this goofy note, it counts.

Also checked for nearby security cameras. Maybe a neighbor’s ring cam caught something. It’s frustrating, but at least I’ve got proof someone owned up (sort of) to it. How’d you handle getting your car fixed without info?

... Read moreFinding a note like that under your wiper is truly next-level frustrating. When I saw it – a handwritten note basically saying 'I'm just pretending to write down my insurance information because people are watching me' – my jaw just dropped. Seriously, the audacity! It’s one thing to hit someone’s car, but to leave such a sarcastic, guilt-free message is infuriating. It feels like a personal jab, not just a property crime. The damage to my car is real, but the 'apology' is a total joke, and it leaves you feeling utterly helpless and disrespected. It really makes you wonder about the person who wrote it. Are they truly so brazen, or were they genuinely scared and hoping to avoid confrontation, hence the 'people are watching' excuse? Either way, it leaves you, the victim, in a terrible bind, grappling with both the physical damage to your car and the psychological annoyance of such a brazen act. I've been stewing over this, thinking about how bizarre it is to confront a situation where someone hits my car and flees with a joke note. It's not just a standard hit-and-run; it's a hit-and-run with a passive-aggressive, almost mocking confession that adds insult to injury. Beyond the initial shock and filing a police report, there are a few other avenues I've been exploring, and wanted to share with anyone else who might face this kind of absurd scenario. First, your own insurance company. Even if the other driver is a ghost, your comprehensive or collision coverage (if you have it) might kick in. It’s worth calling them immediately to understand your deductible and what your policy covers for uninsured or unknown drivers. I know for many, the thought of paying a deductible after someone else caused the damage to your car is tough, especially if the other person explicitly states they "can't afford to fix it" in their note. But sometimes, activating your own policy is the quickest and most reliable way to get your vehicle repaired and back on the road. Don't let their irresponsibility prevent you from taking care of your property. Another thing I'm considering is checking with local body shops. Sometimes they've seen similar notes or even have advice on how to proceed with estimates, especially if you're hoping to eventually track down the culprit or at least gauge the repair cost. They might also be able to give you a rough idea of the cost, which helps in deciding whether to involve insurance or pay out of pocket if the damage is minor and below your deductible. Getting multiple quotes can also be beneficial. And for anyone who's ever found a handwritten note from someone who hits my car and flees with a joke note, remember to document EVERYTHING. Not just the note and the damage itself, but the exact location, time, and any potential witnesses or businesses with security cameras nearby. Even if the police can't immediately help or identify the individual, this thorough documentation is absolutely crucial for your insurance claim and any potential future legal action, however unlikely. Every detail counts when you're trying to piece together what happened. This whole experience has made me rethink car safety and parking habits too. I'm now seriously looking into getting a dashcam, especially one with parking monitoring capabilities. It might not prevent someone hitting my car and fleeing, but it could provide concrete video evidence if it happens again, hopefully avoiding another ambiguous 'I'm just pretending to write down my insurance information because people are watching me' situation. It's frustrating to have to factor in these precautions because of someone else's negligence, but we've got to protect ourselves and our property as best we can in this unpredictable world. Stay safe out there!
