S + L. The understated moments.

Sometimes, it’s not about the ostentatious couple’s portraits. As a wedding photographer, artistic, creative shots of the couple have become somewhat of a calling card for me. It’s what I do best, and it’s undoubtedly the work I’m most proud of. However, it’s always good to be reminded that wedding coverage is much more than just fancy abstract photography. Sheryl and Liang Wei’s wedding was one such reminder. Laced between the frenetic energy of the gatecrash games and the epic ballroom aisle marches were quieter moments: A conversation with a friend before the day begins, a groom waiting in his car to fetch his bride-to-be, a quick group photo during tea break. The understated scenes that slip by if you’re not paying close attention.

It is these fleeting interactions that are important to capture and hold.

Make no mistake, there was no shortage of loud electrifying moments. A military procession to rival all others, an audience bursting with laughter, and the longest, loudest yum-seng I’ve experienced in recent memory. Sheryl and Liang Wei (and their guests) made sure that this was a celebration to be remembered for years to come. I for one, am honoured to be able to bear witness and safekeep these memories, both intimate and spectacular alike.

... Read moreWhen attending or photographing a wedding, it’s easy to be drawn to the grand, dramatic moments like the bridal entrance or the couple’s first dance. However, over the years, I’ve learned that the true essence of a wedding often lies in the understated, seemingly small interactions that occur between these highlights. For instance, the brief pauses before the ceremony starts—where nerves meet excitement—or the candid chats between guests during breaks—offer a more authentic glimpse into the day’s emotional texture. At Sheryl and Liang Wei’s wedding, held at the elegant Amara Sanctuary Sentosa, these quiet yet powerful moments emerged beautifully. I recall capturing a subtle yet meaningful exchange between the groom waiting patiently in his car and the anticipation visible on his face before stepping out to meet his bride. These snapshots of candid emotion convey as much, if not more, than the posed portraits commonly associated with wedding photography. Moreover, embracing the cultural elements like the lively gatecrash games and a spirited yum-seng celebration added layers of richness that balanced the day’s energy. As someone who often favors creative and artistic shots, this experience reminded me how important it is to hold space for all these different types of memories—both the loud and the quiet—to truly tell the full story of a wedding. For couples planning their big day or photographers aiming to showcase wedding narratives authentically, focusing on these subtle moments alongside the major events can enhance the depth and emotional resonance of the final images. It’s these nuanced interactions that families will look back on to remember the real feeling of the day, making them treasures beyond the spectacular shots. Incorporating venues like Amara Sanctuary Sentosa also plays a role in setting the tone. The serene environment provides a meaningful backdrop that complements both the grandeur and the intimacy of wedding festivities, contributing to stunning photographs that stand the test of time. In conclusion, by paying attention to the understated moments—the quiet smiles, the meaningful glances, and the spontaneous laughter—you create a tapestry of memories that are both heartfelt and timeless, making every wedding story uniquely compelling.
