How do you fight the “I have to do it all” mindset

As someone who’s cycled through “hustle” and “crash,” I’ve noticed a trend: the most dedicated workers/perfectionists, over-committers, the “I’ll take it on” folks burnout fastest. It’s not just about workload, it’s the mindset traps we fall into.

First: Tying self-worth to performance. So many of us think, “If I’m not productive, I’m not valuable.” Miss a deadline? Failure. Not the top performer? What’s my point? This “contingent self-worth” makes us feel like we have to prove ourselves nonstop. Rest becomes guilt, and burnout becomes inevitable. Ever thought, “Why can’t I keep up with others?” Yeah, me too, that’s the trap.

Second: The “I can handle it” habit. We’re the ones saying “I got this” even when overwhelmed. Asking for help feels like weakness, so we ignore stress signals, sleepless nights, irritability because “others need us.” Newsflash: pushing until collapse isn’t strength. It’s a fast track to burnout.

Third: No boundaries = endless exhaustion. We take on tasks “because no one else will” or work late “to prove dedication.” We confuse over-responsibility with worth: “If I don’t do it, I’m letting people down.” But burnout doesn’t care about good intentions, it just uses up all your energy.

Switching jobs? Doesn’t fix the mindset. I’ve seen friends repeat the cycle: “Gotta prove I belong here,” “Can’t say no to the new team.” The real issue? Believing our value comes from what we do, not who we are. Anyone relate?
