How's life being a mom at your early 20's?

My friend told me yesterday she’s pregnant. She’s only 19, and honestly I’m all over the place with feelings. She’s so excited about it, but I just keep thinking about her what this means for her life right now. She said her boyfriend’s totally on board, that he can support her and the baby. When she said “the baby,” it sounded so surreal like we’re way too young for that word. She mentioned being scared of how her body’ll change, though, and that she’s not sure if she’s ready. She says she wants to do it, but part of her doesn’t. She even said it feels like her old life’s ending because if she goes through with it, nothing’ll ever be the same. And she’s terrified of backing out, too. My heart aches for her. Anyone had a friend face a big life choice like this young? Do you think this is the right thing to do at your early 20's?

... Read moreMy friend's news got me thinking so much about what it truly means to be a mom in your early 20s. It's a huge decision, and like her, many women find themselves at a crossroads, balancing excitement with a lot of 'what ifs.' It's not just about being 'ready' in terms of age, but about emotional, financial, and personal readiness. Sometimes, people have preconceived notions about young moms. They might think you're throwing your life away, or that you won't be able to achieve your dreams. But I've heard so many inspiring stories of 'moms in their 20s' who defy these stereotypes. They continue their education, build careers, and raise amazing kids, often with an incredible amount of resilience and determination. The 'POV' of a young mom isn't a single narrative; it's a tapestry of diverse experiences. One of the biggest hurdles for a '19 year old friend' who becomes pregnant can be the shift in her social life. While friends might be going out, traveling, or focusing on their careers, a young mom's priorities completely change. This can lead to feelings of isolation. But it also presents an opportunity to build a new community with other parents. Finding support groups, online forums, or even just one understanding friend can make all the difference. Financially, it can be tough. Many young people are just starting their careers or are still in school. The cost of raising a baby is significant, and navigating this without established savings or a stable income requires careful planning and often, immense sacrifice. However, a supportive partner, like my friend's boyfriend who is 'happy about it' and willing to support, can be a game-changer. It's crucial for future parents to have honest conversations about finances and responsibilities. Then there's the emotional aspect. My friend mentioned being scared of how her body will change, and that's totally valid. Pregnancy and childbirth transform you physically, but also mentally. Hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and the sheer weight of responsibility can be overwhelming. It's okay to feel scared, even when you're 'happy about it.' These feelings are normal, and acknowledging them is the first step towards managing them. On the flip side, many 'young motherhood' stories highlight the incredible bond formed with a child at an earlier age. Some moms feel they have more energy in their 20s to keep up with young children. They might also feel like they "grow up" alongside their child, learning and experiencing things together. The perspective of seeing the world anew through your child's eyes at an earlier stage can be incredibly enriching. If you have a '19 year old friend' facing this, the best thing you can do is offer non-judgmental support. Listen to her fears, celebrate her joys, and remind her that she's not alone. Help her research resources, offer practical help if you can, and most importantly, just be there. Every journey to 'mom in 20s' status is unique, and it's about making the best choices for her and her baby, whatever that looks like.

It’s totally her and the baby’s father decision on what she does. It shouldn’t matter what you think. As a friend all you can do is be there to support if you choose to. But if you choose to actually be there then actually be there for her with no judgement because you have no idea what goes on in her mind.

I got pregnant at 19. Outta school of course. I didn’t know I was pregnant it wasn’t planned. I found out when I was 3 months. I decided to go forward with it. I’m not overly happy. But I’m content and just happy to be a mom. I’m expected to give birth May 5th. I turned 20 two weeks after I found out I was pregnant.
