“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12, CSB)
“Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. Resist him, firm in the faith…” (1 Peter 5:8-9, CSB)
... Read moreI remember times when I felt completely drained, not just physically, but spiritually. It's like a heavy cloud follows you, making everything feel overwhelming. You might be asking, "What else do I do?" when these feelings creep in. It’s crucial to recognize the signs of spiritual warfare so you can effectively fight back.
From my own experience, I've learned that a spiritual attack can manifest in many ways. You might find yourself feeling consistently discouraged, losing your spiritual desire, or experiencing bouts of confusion and loneliness. Anxiety and guilt can become constant companions, and old wounds might resurface with an intensity you haven't felt in years. Sometimes, it even presents as physical fatigue that no amount of rest seems to fix, or an increase in temptation and unexpected difficulties cropping up everywhere. The constant barrage of negative thoughts is also a huge red flag for me.
Another area where I've noticed spiritual warfare can hit hard is in relationships. It felt like little arguments would flare up, trust would erode, and I'd find myself pulling away from the very people who supported me. It's truly eye-opening to realize how the enemy can use our connections against us, creating division and sowing discord. These challenges can often feel like they come out of nowhere, making you question everything and everyone around you.
So, what do you do when you recognize these signs? The good news is, we aren't helpless! As Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." And 1 Peter 5:8-9 urges us to "Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. Resist him, firm in the faith…"
For me, consistent praying is non-negotiable. It's my direct line to God, a powerful weapon against discouragement and anxiety. Staying grounded in scripture helps me refocus and remember God's promises, especially when those negative thoughts try to take over. Fellowship with other believers and attending church has been a lifeline; there's strength in numbers, and accountability helps me stay firm in my faith. Understanding and metaphorically 'wearing the Armor of God' has helped me prepare for each day – it’s about truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word. Worship is another powerful tool; it shifts my focus from the problems to God's greatness. Actively resisting the devil by speaking truth and standing firm, just as 1 Peter says, is vital. Finally, practicing gratitude shifts my perspective from what's going wrong to what's right, diminishing the power of those persistent negative thoughts. By intentionally engaging in these practices, I've learned how to overcome spiritual attacks and navigate spiritual warfare with more strength and peace.
