These books have truly helped me along my journey of improving my marriage. Each one of these books give details on the good, the bad, and how to repair. It aims to give you a deeper understand of your partner and yourself, and how to move through conflict successfully. The mere fact is it all comes down to mindfulness, because change has to start with you. You cannot do the same thing and expect a different result to come from it.
Love & Respect by Dr Emerson Eggerichs
This books is based on biblical principles of marriage, specifically highlighting Ephesians 5:33. It explains the different need strengths that men and women have in regards to Love and Respect. The primary focus is what Dr Emerson Eggerichs calls the Crazy Cycle: Without love she reacts without respect; Without Respect he reacts without love. He dives in to explain how men and women can approach one another with sediments of love and respect. It was through this book that I was introduced to Dr John Gottman and Dr Julie Gottmans research studies done on couples, henceforth the following books:
Why Marriages Succeed or Fail
What Makes Love Last?
7 Days to More Intimacy, Connection, and Joy.
Fight Right
Each one of this books dives into the scientific research and what was discovered through it. Each one explains the different types of communication styles we have, the suspected risks with each style, the things that escalate a conflict, where the roommate phase starts, betrayal(silent betrayal) and trust, self-test to help you determine where you stand with each category that is spoke about, and how to navigate through conflict more efficiently to maintain a 5 to 1 ratio (5 positive interactions to every 1 negative interaction).
These are the books that I most recommend when it comes to marriage. The Gottman Institute also has a website that can pair you with a marriage counselor local to you that has been trained in their method. I hope this helps💕🫧
... Read moreIt's amazing how a book cover can sometimes be the first step towards a breakthrough. When I was searching for ways to truly understand my relationship, seeing titles like 'Why Marriages Succeed or Fail' by John Gottman PhD, or 'What Makes Love Last?' and 'Fight Right' by Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, felt like a sign. These aren't just pretty covers; they represent profound wisdom that can genuinely change your perspective.
Specifically, 'Why Marriages Succeed or Fail' became a cornerstone for me. Dr. Gottman's scientific approach, based on decades of observing real couples, cut through all the guesswork. Before reading it, I often felt confused about why certain arguments escalated or why we sometimes felt distant. This book helped me identify the 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' – criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling – in our own interactions, and more importantly, gave me strategies to counteract them. It wasn't about blaming; it was about understanding patterns and making conscious choices to break negative cycles.
What resonated deeply with me was the idea of making 'bids for connection' and turning towards each other. It sounds simple, but recognizing those small moments where your partner tries to connect, and responding positively, can be incredibly powerful. This concept, further explored in books like 'The Love Prescription: 7 Days to More Intimacy, Connection, and Joy,' moved beyond just identifying problems and offered actionable steps to foster intimacy and joy. It's about building a 'Love Map' of your partner's inner world, sharing fondness and admiration, and managing conflict in a way that actually strengthens your bond, rather than eroding it.
I also found the insights from 'Love & Respect' by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs incredibly complementary. While different in its foundational principles, it beautifully illustrates the distinct needs for unconditional love and unconditional respect between partners. Understanding that dynamic, coupled with Gottman's research on communication styles, gave me a more holistic view. It's like these books provide both the 'what's going wrong' and the 'how to fix it' in a deeply empathetic way.
The self-tests and practical exercises within these books are invaluable. They prompted me to honestly assess our communication patterns, our friendship, and even our shared meaning. It’s not just theoretical; it's hands-on work that encourages you to apply what you learn directly to your relationship. For anyone wondering how to navigate disagreements more effectively or simply keep the spark alive, these titles—like 'Why Marriages Succeed or Fail' and 'Fight Right: How Successful Couples Turn Conflict Into Connection'—are more than just books; they're guides that illuminate the path to a more fulfilling partnership.
This is awesome! Definitely getting these books 🥰
