Another sleepless night 😰

Having just finished reading Darcy Coates' novella "Dead Lake," I can personally attest to its ability to engross readers and unsettle them in equal measure. At only 115 pages, the story packs a punch without overstaying its welcome. I found myself completely immersed, imagining the eerie setting and feeling the characters’ fear as though it were my own. This brevity actually worked to maintain a high level of suspense throughout, but I shared the feeling that I wished the story were just a bit longer to explore the characters and backstory deeper. What I especially appreciated was how the author didn’t rely on gore or cheap scares, but rather built psychological dread that lingers after the last page. It’s a perfect choice if you want a horror read that’s both smart and spine-chilling. For anyone who loves horror or is part of a book club looking for a haunting story to discuss, "Dead Lake" by Darcy Coates offers an excellent balance of creepy ambiance and tight narrative. It’s also a great pick for nights when you want a thrilling read that will keep you on edge but won’t require days to get through. Overall, this novella is a great example of how horror can be impactful without needing a lengthy format, and it definitely has made me look forward to more works by Darcy Coates in the future.
