🚨 Reading Rant 🚨

Spoiler Alert ⚠️ The Good Girl Effect

.

.

.

Okay, just finished The Good Girl Effect, and I was sooo close to giving it 4 ⭐️… then came the pregnancy.

Sara Cate reduced the most vibrant, exciting, strong willed characters to a mother, as if only then could she truly be happy.

The pregnancy trope is tired, unoriginal, and veryyy unsexy. No one wants to think about swollen ankles and baby puke in the middle of a spicy scene.

I pray one day romance writers are delivered from societal pressures and expectations of making female characters mothers in order for them to get their happy ending.

If you have a romance rec where with the fmc doesn’t get pregnant in the end… drop it below!

... Read moreAs an avid reader of romance novels, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern that often leaves me disappointed: the pregnancy trope as a gateway to a happy ending. The recent read, The Good Girl Effect by Sara Cate, exemplifies this well-known narrative device. While the story features vibrant and strong-willed female characters, the conclusion reduces them to mothers, implying that motherhood is the ultimate fulfillment for women. This feels not only outdated but also unrelatable for many readers who want to enjoy romance without the added real-life complexities of pregnancy. Personally, I find that including a pregnancy plotline in the climax or resolution of a romance story can detract from the romantic and spicy elements that draw readers in. Who wants to imagine swollen ankles or morning sickness interrupting intimate moments? This trope can feel like an unnecessary societal expectation rather than an organic story development. It’s refreshing to find romance books where the heroine’s happiness is not tied to motherhood but to personal growth, healthy relationships, and mutual respect. Thankfully, there is a growing subgenre of romance novels that challenge these conventions. Books featuring independent heroines who find joy and fulfillment without pregnancy are gaining popularity. Titles focusing on emotional connection, adventure, or career-driven women maintain the romantic intensity and satisfy the desire for compelling narratives without falling back on traditional clichés. For readers tired of the pregnancy trope, I recommend exploring authors who intentionally avoid this plot device. There are spicy romances with empowered female leads who live happily ever after without becoming mothers. Sharing these finds can help change reader expectations and encourage writers to diversify their storylines. Engaging in community discussions, like dropping recommendations where the female main character doesn’t get pregnant, fosters a supportive environment for fresh storytelling. It also encourages writers to consider new ways to portray happiness and fulfillment beyond motherhood. Ultimately, romance fiction should reflect the diversity of women’s experiences and desires, not just societal norms.
