The pickup is a long-standing symbol of "power" and the "American dream." The image of a suburban home with a pickup truck parked in front of the house is the memory of the United States. On the Chinese side, the pickup market is also growing hotly, with total sales of 537,000 vehicles in the first 11 months, up 12 percent from a year earlier. Manufacturers like Great Wall Motors and Radar New Energy Vehicles are constantly expanding their export markets.

Most notably, the new energy pickup (NEV), which includes electric trains and plug-in hybrids, has hit 335% or about 67,000 vehicles in 2025 alone. China is not looking at the pickup as just an operational vehicle, but as a new technology platform for the global market.

While Thailand is one of the strongest pickup markets in the world, the pickup truck is not just a vehicle, but a means of livelihood, durability, toughness and low cost of use, which is why the diesel pickup also dominates the market.

Despite the rapid growth in EV flows, pickup users are concerned with mileage, loading, towing, battery life. Currently, most Thai electric pickup trucks are also positioned as semi-lifestyle use vehicles, rather than full diesel pickup substitutions.

On the other hand, Chinese manufacturers view Thailand as a key test field; if an electric pickup proves itself in one of the most brutal markets, regional reliability will follow.

Major US manufacturers like Ford, GM and Stellantis have instead opted for a "slowdown" or "retreat" from the fully electric pickup truck. Ford has confirmed that it will end production of the current F-150 Lightning and turn to developing the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), while the new electric pickup plan is still fraught with uncertainty.

Cost factors, towing concerns, mileage, and cultural resistance have kept the American market from being ready to open up to full-body electric pickup trucks.
