China isn't much known for pickup trucks, but that's changing. Many car manufacturing companies, including BYD and Geely's Radar Auto, are making their mark in international markets with battery electric pickup trucks (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

BYD launched its first pickup truck, the Shark 6, in Mexico in May; it is currently sold in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Panama, Peru and other countries, competing with the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

The Shark is a plug-in hybrid pickup truck (PHEV) built on BYD's DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) platform. It uses a 29.58 kWh battery, a dual electric motor, and a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces about 430 horsepower (321 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. BYD's pickup has an electric running distance of about 62 miles (100 km) and in total can run about 522 miles (840 km).

It now appears that BYD is preparing a second-generation pickup truck, in which a new design patent filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) reveals a smaller pickup than the Shark model; although BYD has yet to disclose a price or specification, some details point to it being a compact pickup truck, priced lower than the Shark 6 medium model.

This new pickup truck, spotted in China earlier this month, was camouflaged. Despite its camouflage, it appears to be smaller than the Shark and has a smaller rear pickup area. The new patent reveals that the car will use a unibody design, which is characteristic of a small crossover car, indicating that it will position lower than the Shark model in the line-up.

As reported by the media, this new pickup will be the initial version of the Shark BYD family. It has not yet been revealed whether this new model will be purely electric or plug-in, with domestic sources reporting that it may use a DMO platform much like the Shark 6, or it may use a DM-i or DM-p hybrid drive kit at a lower cost than BYD's.
