Nissan reveals learning from China adjusts to EV ⚡ speeds up car development to half
Nissan reveals learning from China adjusts to EV ⚡ speeds up car development to half 🤩🤩
.
Nissan Motor Co. announced on June 12 that it could reduce the development period of new models by almost half, from the original 55 months to only 26 months. The new approach was inspired by the Chinese automaker's AI-powered rapid car development model.
.
Nissan President Ivan Espinosa revealed that the new development process has been proven with the new Skyline, scheduled for launch in the winter of 2026, and that the company aims to apply the approach to over 90% of vehicle development projects by fiscal year 2026.
.
This transformation is rooted in Nissan's experience in China, through its partnership with Dongfeng Motor, which helps Nissan bring the technology and expertise of local teams to deploy effectively.
.
A prime example is the Nissan N7, a new electric car launched in April 2025 that took only 2 years to develop, and became the prototype of the company's new development approach.
.
AI is used throughout the development process.
To be able to dramatically shorten the development time of the car, Nissan brought in artificial intelligence (AI) to help at every stage, namely
.
Design (Design)
AI automatically creates models and design offerings, and improves both aerodynamics and aesthetics, greatly reducing human editing.
.
Testing (Testing)
Virtual Simulation replaces more than 60% of real prototype tests, significantly reducing safety, durability and crash test times.
.
Decision-Making
AI analyzes market data and consumer behavior more quickly, helps companies respond to market demand in a timely manner, and reduces in-house approval procedures.
.
Supply Chain
AI pre-predicts parts requirements, including assessing supply risks, allowing for a smooth transition from research and development to mass production.
.
Despite Nissan accelerating its major adjustment, the situation in China remains extremely challenging, with in May 2026 the company reaching sales in China of only 30,025 vehicles, down to 41.1% compared to the same period a year earlier.
.
This announcement therefore reflects that Japanese automakers are openly acknowledging that the speed of product development used by Chinese car camps today has become the new standard of the global car industry and something that traditional brands must accelerate to adapt. 🤩🤩
