Nurturing Your Inner Child
Something that has been heavy on my heart: the importance of having childlike faith. When we’re kids, it’s easy to believe in things we can’t see. We trust, we hope, we dream. Jesus Himself tells us in Matthew 18:3, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” That kind of faith…the innocent, unwavering belief is what keeps us connected to God, to joy, and to ourselves. But as we grow older, life starts moving faster. One day we’re learning how to ride a bike, and the next, we’re juggling bills, jobs, and endless responsibilities. Somewhere along the way, we forget how to wonder, how to dream, and sometimes, how to trust. The world tells us to “grow up,” to toughen up, to focus on “what matters.” And in the process, we silence that inner child. The part of us that believes without seeing, that finds joy in the little things, and that hopes in confidence. The truth is, we never outgrow the need for care, connection, and play. That inner child is still with us, whispering through moments of nostalgia, joy, or even pain. When we neglect them, those unmet needs and unhealed wounds start to shape how we see the world, how we love, and even how we see God. But when we pause and tend to that part of us, we create space for healing, for joy, and for a deeper connection with Him.
So how do we take care of that inner child?
✨Embrace childlike faith – Trust God the way a child trusts their parent: fully, openly, and without hesitation
✨Make space for play – Do something you loved as a kid, whether it’s drawing, playing outside, or building something silly. I’ve recently got back into dancing & I work with children. It’s not wasted time, it’s healing.
✨Speak kindly to yourself – Tell yourself the words you needed to hear when you were younger. Things like, “You’re enough.” “You’re loved.” You’re safe.”
✨Acknowledge old wounds – Healing doesn’t happen overnight, but when we invite God into those broken places, He meets us there with grace. Be ready to work.
Time will always keep moving, but the wonder, hope, and trust of childhood don’t have to fade. They’re still there, waiting for you to nurture them. So take a moment, listen to your inner child, and lean into the faith Jesus calls us to have. It might just lead you back to the version of yourself and the life you were always meant to live. 💫
