How is a car like this road legal?

I stopped by Concours Collection Storage in Los Angeles to check out the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento they have on site: one of around ten ever produced, and one of only two that’s certified for the street.

In 2011, this car was impossible. Loosely based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, it’s imbued with technology from the aerospace industry, and it was the first car to feature forged carbon fiber, which you can see absolutely everywhere. The interior is just a padded carbon tub, with no dashboard or digital aids. The exterior components are all carbon too, down to the exhaust tips and the wheels. Even the suspension is constructed from carbon, so the Sesto Elemento weighs just under one tonne, making it lighter than a Mazda Miata.

All of them were built for track use only, but Lanzante in England offers a road legal conversion, and this one had the work done. With that, you get an AC system, a front axle lift, indicators, license plate brackets — it isn’t much, but it makes it registrable, and there’s definitely allure to having a road legal race car.

The Sesto Elemento was one of my childhood superheroes, and fifteen years later, it’s just as exciting.
