Choosing West Texas, especially around Midland, was absolutely perfect for us. The arid, rocky landscape creates such a dramatic and unique backdrop that you just can't get anywhere else. Those vast, open skies and the stunning sunsets are seriously magical for photos, offering an incredible natural light show at golden hour.
We knew we wanted to embrace the true West Texas vibe, so picking out our western attire was key. Think classic cowboy hats, sturdy boots, and stylish denim, but with a touch of elegance that still felt true to us. For me, that meant pairing a flowy dress with some beautiful turquoise bracelets – they added the perfect pop of color and felt so authentically Southwestern. Showing off my engagement ring in those close-up shots became even more special against that rugged, natural backdrop. It felt so personal and unique!
One of the best decisions we made was including our fur babies! Our two small dogs, a brown dachshund and a merle dapple puppy, brought so much joy and personality to the shoot. Having them in the foreground while we shared a kiss in the blurred background made for some of the most heartwarming and candid photos. If you have pets, definitely consider bringing them along; they make the session so much more "us" and add an extra layer of sweetness to your memories.
We also got super creative with props to enhance the theme! You can see in some of our photos, we even incorporated a horse trailer, which added such an authentic ranch feel and a really cool, rustic element to the shots. My fiancé, with his cowboy hat, even threw a lasso in one shot, which was not only incredibly fun but also perfectly captured his personality and the spirit of West Texas. These little details truly make the session unique to you as a couple and tell your specific love story.
Our photographer was amazing at capturing candid moments throughout the day. From embracing in a vast field under the big sky, to laughing inside the horse trailer with the sunlight streaming in, every moment felt genuine. The rocky outcrops and arid landscape provided so many interesting spots for us to pose and interact. We made sure to schedule our shoot around sunset, and it totally paid off! We ended the session with some incredible silhouette shots against a soft, fading sunset sky – pure romance and absolutely breathtaking. If you're envisioning a unique, adventurous engagement session that truly reflects your love story and offers a stunning, natural backdrop, I can't recommend a West Texas theme enough. It's truly an unforgettable experience and results in the most breathtaking photos you'll cherish forever. Trust me, it's worth every bit of planning and exploration!
