ALC Review

Okay, so let me tell you, when I picked up Ruby M. Darling's 'Scream: Duchess & Devils Duet, Book 1' as an ALC, I had no idea I was signing up for an all-nighter. Seriously, adulting usually means I can barely finish a chapter before real life calls, but this book? Impossible to put down. I literally said 'f*ck it' to sleep and just kept listening, and honestly, no regrets! From the moment I started, I was pulled into a world of organized crime and intense emotions. The author, Ruby M. Darling, just weaves this intricate web of danger, trauma, and eventual healing that completely captivated me. My heart ached for the characters, especially with the heavy themes explored, but seeing their growth and resilience made every tear worth it. Let's talk about the main characters because WOW. First, you have Sabrina Winters, our 'Duchess.' She starts as this pink-loving lawyer and baker, and you see her undergo such immense growth. The OCR mentioned a collage with a woman in a pink fluffy robe and a hand with a piping bag, which perfectly encapsulates her initial vibe before she's thrown into this dangerous world. Her journey is truly amazing. Then there's Maksim Giordano, my 'sexy Italian Shrek' (as I affectionately call him!). He's dark, possessive, and surprisingly, a virgin MMC. The 'MaKS' collage with the tattooed man and security footage really gives you a sense of his intense, guarded nature. And finally, Parker Hayes, the army vet turned bodyguard with that swoon-worthy southern drawl. He's the 'Savage' from the OCR, and his protective nature is just everything. The dynamic between these three, that panty-drenching MFM spice? Ooof, it’s off the charts and so well done within the 'why choose' framework. The tropes in this book are just chef's kiss for dark romance lovers: MFM, why choose, an intense arranged marriage, mafia/bratva elements, and a dedicated bodyguard. The 'who hurt you' and 'found family' themes are also beautifully explored, adding so much depth to the story. I particularly loved the 'my wife' trope, which always gets me! And the audiobook narration? Amy Hall and Joe Arden? Absolutely sensational. They brought Duchess, Maks, and Savage to life in a way that truly elevated the story. Their performance made it easy to visualize everything, from the dark cityscapes to Sabrina's sweet cupcakes. The headphones in the ALC cover are definitely a symbol of the immersive experience they deliver. Just a heads-up for anyone diving in: there are definite trigger warnings and content warnings to be aware of (the original post mentioned 'ur mental health matters. ✔️TW/CW'). This isn't a light read, but it's incredibly rewarding. Also, prepare yourself for a ginormous cliffhanger at the end. I almost threw my Kindle (but didn't, thankfully!). How could Ruby M. Darling do that to us?! It just means I'm absolutely desperate for the next book in the Duchess & Devils Duet.
