๐ญ ive smh & rolled my eyes about 60% of the book, mostly coz of rylee. but i did enjoy the story. heres why (& in no particular order of their appearance). ๐ฐ๐ต๐๐ฐ๐ธ is intrguing but still a mystery. ๐๐ฎ๐๐ป screams mischief & chaos while ๐ฏ๐น๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ is the quiet no bs/no sugarcoating kinda guy. i might be the oddball & say the twins are the ones i enjoyed most here. i cant wait to dig deeper & get to know them more. sure ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ didnt completely win me over in this book but im crossing my fingers for a redemption arc for him later. & ๐ฟ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฒ... shes a mess atm!! obv shes an adult but thats juz a number. as shown by her actions & choices. i do empathize on her survivors guilt so for now, im going to say im content. i know this is only book 1 & so im still hopeful that i will see growth in her more into the series.

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, let's dive even deeper into 'Vicious Games: The Lies We Keep'! I mentioned it's Book 1, and honestly, Steph Macca sets up such a complex world here. While Rylee might frustrate you at times โ I totally get the 'rolling my eyes' feeling โ her journey is genuinely compelling. She's navigating some serious survivor's guilt, and seeing how her past choices shape her present interactions with these intense characters is what keeps you hooked. You can really feel her struggle, and I'm genuinely rooting for her growth throughout the series.
Now, let's talk about the men who make these 'vicious games' so enthralling. Zayn truly lives up to his 'mischief & chaos' reputation, adding a wild, unpredictable energy, while Blake's quiet strength and no-nonsense attitude provide a grounding force. I found myself so drawn to their contrasting personalities and how they interact with Rylee. And Chuck? Still a delicious mystery, leaving me eager to uncover his secrets. Asher, on the other hand, well, he hasn't fully won me over yet, but I'm holding out hope for a redemption arc that will completely change my perspective. This group certainly exemplifies the 'morally grey characters' promise, making every interaction unpredictable.
This isn't your typical fluffy romance; itโs a full-on 'dark contemporary' experience. The 'college romance' setting provides a backdrop for some seriously intense themes, including 'forbidden' relationships and the complexities that arise when 'stepbrothers' and 'twin brothers' are involved, especially when one is your 'bestie's bf.' It's a tangled web, to say the least! The 'dark romance' tag is definitely earned, exploring raw emotions and difficult situations. And yes, for those wondering, the 'spicy' and 'smut' elements are definitely present, adding another layer of heat and tension to the story without feeling gratuitous. The 'violence' mentioned in the content warning is handled in a way that contributes to the dark atmosphere, making the stakes feel incredibly high. Some might even categorize this as a 'dark reverse harem romance' given the dynamic and multiple male leads, which adds an exciting twist to the 'found family' trope.
And oh my goodness, the audiobook! I cannot stress enough how much the full cast narration elevates this story. Michelle Sparks, Joe Arden, Anthony Palmini, Sean Masters, and Aaron Shedlock truly become these characters. Their voices fit so perfectly, bringing out the nuances in Rylee's internal struggles, Zayn's playful menace, and Blake's quiet intensity. Listening to them navigate the emotional rollercoaster of 'The Lies We Keep' made the experience so much more immersive. Itโs not just reading a book; itโs like watching a movie unfold in your mind, especially when the narrators capture the 'vicious games' playing out between the characters. If you're an audiobook fan, this is a must-listen to truly grasp the depth of Steph Macca's storytelling.
