One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig 🃏✨🐦‍⬛

One Dark Window follows Elspeth Spindle, cursed with a 500-year-old monster trapped inside her, instead of the magical powers others in her kingdom have—many of whom are also infected. The kingdom of Blunder is shrouded in a mist that can only be lifted by uniting the 12 Providence cards. Those infected are captured by the kings guards, and their families are sent into the mist. As Elspeth navigates a world of betrayal and deception, she must team up with others to find the cards, all while trying to hide the dangerous monster inside her—and risking falling in love along the way.

It took me a bit to get into, especially with all the world-building, but once I got past that, it was such a dark, twisted ride. Elspeth’s journey, hiding the monster inside her for eleven years, was so isolating to read—she’s carrying this heavy secret that no one can know about. Learning more about the nightmare within her felt like piecing together a puzzle, and I couldn't put the book down once everything started clicking. The last few chapters set up the second book perfectly. I’ve already finished it so I’ll be posting about it later this week! 5/5✨#bookrecommendations #onedarkwindow #booksoflemon8 #trending

... Read moreAfter sharing my initial thoughts on One Dark Window, I've had so many friends ask me more about Elspeth Spindle and what truly makes this book a stand-out dark fantasy read. Let's delve a bit deeper into some of the elements that really captivated me! First off, Elspeth Spindle herself is such a compelling character. While her exact age isn't explicitly stated, she's certainly a young woman burdened by a secret she's had to carry for eleven years – the dreaded 'nightmare' residing within her. This isn't just a simple magical power; it's a dangerous entity that isolates her, making her journey incredibly poignant. How she navigates a world filled with fear and suspicion, all while trying to maintain her sanity and protect those she cares about, is truly at the heart of the story. Her internal struggle with 'the nightmare' is palpable, and I found myself constantly rooting for her to find a way to control or understand it. The book masterfully uses this 'inner monster' trope to explore themes of identity, sacrifice, and power. Speaking of tropes, One Dark Window absolutely delivers on its gothic fantasy aesthetic, much like the stunning book cover suggests with its dark, intricate imagery. From the moment you pick it up, you can feel the oppressive mist of Blunder and the ancient, foreboding atmosphere. The story weaves in classic gothic elements – think dark castles, shadowed forests, and a pervasive sense of dread – perfectly complementing the 'magical quest' Elspeth finds herself on. And for those who love a good romantic tension, the 'forced proximity' and 'enemies to lovers' dynamics are subtly yet powerfully woven into the narrative, adding another layer of intrigue to Elspeth's perilous quest. It's not just about finding the Providence cards; it's about navigating dangerous alliances and unexpected attractions. The world-building, which initially took me a moment to grasp, truly blossoms into something unique. The concept of the 12 Providence cards and their specific powers, along with the kingdom's history and the pervasive mist, creates a rich backdrop for Elspeth's adventure. The lore surrounding 'the nightmare' is particularly fascinating; piecing together its origins felt like solving a puzzle alongside Elspeth. The hints dropped throughout the book about its true nature and its connection to the kingdom's history kept me utterly engrossed. For anyone looking for a dark fantasy book that offers a gripping plot, a strong female protagonist, and a truly atmospheric setting, One Dark Window is an absolute gem. It’s definitely part of a series, and the way the first book concluded left me desperate for the next installment! If you enjoyed the blend of magic, mystery, and a touch of romance in a beautifully dark world, then this series is a must-add to your reading list.
