Bucket list hike in Utah🥾🤯
This is truly a bucket list hike that everyone needs to do at least once! Here’s what you need to know before you go ⬇️
🥾First up.. GEAR! We used gear from @zionguru. This was the best choice! Lennon and I each did the dry bib package which has a neoprene sock to keep us 95% dry. You also get boots and a walking stick! Our son had a dry-suit package for kids which was the best choice due to the water temp and the depth of the water. The team was so helpful getting us prepared and walking through what to expect!
The Narrows Hike👇🏼
🕖 Start Early: Catch the first shuttle from the Zion Visitor Center to Stop #9 – Temple of Sinawava. This gives you cooler temps and fewer crowds.
🚶♂️ Walk to the Narrows: From the shuttle stop, it’s a 1-mile paved walk (Riverside Walk) to the actual start of the water hike.
💦 Actual hike begins - most of the hike is ankle to knee deep, but some sections can reach waist or chest high depending on recent rainfall and time of year. Expect cold water year-round—typically between 45°F to 55°F (brrr 🥶). Neoprene socks or rental gear are highly recommended in spring/fall.
📏 Full Hike Length: The Bottom-Up route (no permit required) goes up to 5 miles in (10 miles roundtrip) to Big Springs, but you can turn around whenever. Just remember.. you are hiking through a lot of water, it will take longer and be harder than you expect!
💰 Park Entry Fee: $35 per vehicle (valid for 7 days), OR use your America the Beautiful Pass!
If you're planning your hike in The Narrows, keep in mind that the water temperature is quite chilly year-round, generally between 45°F and 55°F, which can be surprising if you're not prepared. Wearing neoprene socks or renting dry suits, especially during spring and fall, makes a huge difference in comfort and safety. When we hiked, the rental gear from @zionguru truly enhanced our experience by keeping us mostly dry and warm. Timing your hike early in the morning is key to avoiding the crowds and enjoying cooler temperatures, as the shuttle to Temple of Sinawava starts early and is the main access point. It also helps you move through the hike at a comfortable pace without rush. Remember that hiking through water is physically demanding—it takes longer than usual, so plan accordingly. Additionally, while the full hike to Big Springs is about 5 miles one way, you can choose to turn around anytime depending on your energy levels and water conditions. Always check the weather and flash flood warnings before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly. Entry fees to Zion National Park are $35 per vehicle, valid for 7 days, and your America the Beautiful Pass is accepted if you have one.
