ANNOTATIONS ✨ Do you annotate your books? What’s your preferred method? #ACOMAF

This was my third round of ACOMAF, and I find that each time I comb through it I find more and more that I didn’t notice before. Especially from a theory/multiverse/Easter egg perspective!

I always annotate the quotes that hit me hardest as I read through on the first round. On the second, I’m looking for Easter eggs and multiverse connections, things I may not have caught while taking in and enjoying the story the first time. The third round is where I go unhinged - this is where I’m in my element. I go back and find my ammo for theories; what could this mean? If this is significant, what is it connected to? I’ve blown my own mind in this series alone many times, and this is the entire reason I read fantasy! The intricate details that are laced throughout these stories that are so often missed are for me the very best part. 🤍👌🏻

What’s your favorite part of annotating?

... Read moreSo, you've heard about annotating books, but maybe you're wondering how to make it truly yours and, let's be honest, look really cute on your shelf? I totally get it! Beyond just marking up pages, book annotation can transform your reading experience into an active conversation with the text. And yes, it can absolutely be aesthetic too! When I first started, I thought it was just about highlighting, but I quickly realized there's a whole world of possibilities. For those looking to dive into the world of cute book annotations and elevate their reading, here are some of my favorite tips and tricks, especially if you're tackling dense, theory-rich fantasy like the ACOTAR series. Making Your Notes Aesthetic & Functional: Color-Coding is Your Best Friend: This is a game-changer! Think about using different colored sticky tabs or highlighters for different purposes. For example, I might use pink for quotes that hit me emotionally, blue for world-building details, green for character insights (like for Rhysand or Feyre!), and yellow for potential plot holes or theories. The images with clear overlays showing 'Rhysand,' 'Feyre,' and 'Multiverse Theory' organized by color are exactly what I mean – it helps you visually categorize your thoughts at a glance. Sticky Tabs Galore: Don't just use one kind! Small, colorful sticky tabs are perfect for quick markers, while larger clear sticky notes (those handy clear overlays!) are fantastic for writing longer thoughts directly on the page without damaging the book. You can jot down your 'multiverse theories' or 'Easter eggs' right there. Pens & Highlighters: Invest in good quality pens that don't bleed through pages. Fine-liner pens in various colors can make your handwritten notes really pop. Highlighters, of course, are essential for those 'aha!' moments. Beyond the Text: Margin Notes & Symbols: Don't be afraid to use the margins! I often draw little stars next to important passages, question marks for things I don't understand, or even tiny hearts for moments that make me swoon. This is where your cute book notes can really shine. Tips for Annotating Books for Deeper Understanding (and finding those 'subtle revisions'!): Engage with Questions: As you read, ask yourself questions. Why did a character do that? What could this foreshadow? What are the implications of this world-building detail? Writing these questions in the margins keeps you actively thinking. Identify Themes & Motifs: Pay attention to recurring ideas, symbols, or phrases. These are often the 'subtle revisions' or intricate details that authors weave in. For instance, in ACOMAF, you might track themes of power, choice, or healing. Track Character Development: Use your color-coding to follow a character's journey. How do Rhysand's motivations change? What internal struggles does Feyre face? Look for Foreshadowing & Connections: This is where the 'Easter eggs' come in! Sometimes an innocuous detail in chapter one will become hugely significant in chapter fifty. Annotating these potential links as you go makes re-reads incredibly rewarding and helps you feel like an 'expert of subtle revisions.' Ultimately, the goal of annotation is to enhance your reading experience. Whether you're making meticulous 'murnured' observations about sentence structure or just highlighting your favorite quotes, the best method is the one that brings you the most joy and helps you connect deeper with the stories you love. Happy annotating!
