The Grizzlies are a relatively young franchise that has been relevant over the past 10-15 years. However, their track record of success doesn't quite match their relevancy. Memphis has had some good teams and solid eras, but they haven't quite been elite.
If this ranking were based solely on the past 15 years, the Grizzlies would be much higher. Unfortunately, their dreadful first 15 years are among the worst stretches any franchise has ever had. No NBA Finals appearances, no all-time greats, and a pretty mediocre history of winning significantly impact the Grizzlies' position in my ranking.

Key figures such as Mike Conley, Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph, and more recently Ja Morant have helped bring Memphis into playoff contention multiple times—showing clear improvement and relevance in the league. Looking at franchise leaders, both Conley and Gasol have left lasting legacies. Conley stands as the leader in points, assists, steals, and three-pointers made for Memphis, while Gasol dominates in rebounds, blocks, and has the highest win shares. Their multiple All-Star and All-NBA selections add to the credibility of the franchise’s recent successes. What truly stands out is how the team’s recent era contrasts with its poor beginnings, underscoring the importance of evaluating franchises not just on historical data but the context of their developmental timeline. While they haven’t yet appeared in an NBA Finals or claimed a championship, the trajectory underlines a promising future. The presence of emerging young star Ja Morant brings excitement and hope that the Grizzlies can climb the ranks even further. For anyone debating the Grizzlies' placement at 28th, it boils down to weighing their rocky start against their recent accomplishments.
