It's always a bittersweet feeling to look back at a project that was so close to fruition, but for one reason or another, didn't quite make it to the finish line. My basketball manga project is one of those. You saw a glimpse of the concept art and character designs, but there's so much more that goes into getting a manga off the ground – and even more reasons why it might not pan out. One of the biggest hurdles was truly capturing the shonen hype energy we all love in sports manga, similar to what you see in Kuroko's Basketball or Slam Dunk. It wasn't just about drawing cool characters; it was about immersing ourselves in the world of basketball. I'm actually not a huge basketball fan myself – I've always been more into soccer or even chess – but that meant I had to dive deep into research. We studied actual games, player movements, and worked hard to ensure all the dynamic poses were accurate and felt authentic to the sport. It was a challenge to make sure every dribble, every shot, every jump felt real on paper, even while injecting that fantastical shonen flair. Putting together the right team was also critical. You need people who are truly versed into basketball to help bridge that knowledge gap and make sure the comic was pristine. My role often involved the initial concept art and bringing the vision to life, but having collaborators who understood the nuances of the sport was invaluable. We spent countless hours sketching, discussing, and refining poses and expressions to convey the intense emotion and speed of a basketball game. Sometimes, despite all the passion and effort, projects just don't work out. It could be timing, resources, or a myriad of other factors. It's a tough lesson many creators face. You pour your heart and soul into something, envisioning it taking off, only for it to remain a collection of ideas and beautiful artwork. But what I learned from this experience is just as valuable as a published work. It taught me resilience, the importance of collaboration, and how to push my artistic boundaries. Even though this particular basketball manga didn't get published, the experience was incredibly rewarding. It honed my skills in character design, storytelling, and world-building for a genre I wasn't originally specialized in. Who knows, maybe one day we'll kinda revisit it! For now, I’m busy with other projects, like Apple Black on Webtoon, which is a whole different adventure. But I'm so glad I got to share this little piece of my creative journey with you all. It’s a reminder that every piece of art, published or not, contributes to an artist’s growth.
