... Read moreThe phrase, 'The Resistance Will Not Be Televised,' has always resonated deeply with me. It’s more than just a catchy line; it’s a profound statement about where true change happens – not always in front of flashing cameras, but in the quiet, determined actions of everyday people. This concept is particularly powerful when reflecting on #blackhistory, a tapestry woven with countless acts of courage and resilience that often go unacknowledged by mainstream media.
That's exactly what I aimed to capture in my latest piece. When I began this painting, I envisioned a figure that embodied this spirit. The central Black woman in the artwork, with her striking afro and determined gaze, isn't waiting for permission or validation. She's pointing forward, leading the way, radiating a powerful and resolute stance that speaks volumes without a single word. Her presence, flanked by two partially visible men, emphasizes the communal aspect of revolution – it's a collective journey.
For me, this piece is a heartfelt tribute to the ongoing resistance within #blackhistory, a celebration of the profound impact made by individuals and communities far from the spotlight. It's about the everyday heroes whose stories might not make the nightly news but whose impact is undeniable. The phrase itself, popularized by Gil Scott-Heron, reminds us that authentic change stems from active participation, from being present and engaged, rather than passively consuming what is presented to us.
Growing up, I often felt that the narratives presented to us were incomplete. Art became my way of filling those gaps, of giving voice to the untold. This painting is a reminder that true power often lies in what is not televised – the community organizing, the conversations at kitchen tables, the quiet acts of defiance. It’s about the enduring spirit of a determined Black woman who refuses to be silenced, whose strength is felt in every fiber of her being, not just seen on a screen.
This artwork challenges us to look beyond the superficial, to engage actively rather than passively consume. It’s a call to recognize the strength in our communities, the wisdom in our elders, and the unwavering spirit that continues to push for justice and equality. Each bold color chosen, every deliberate brushstroke, and the very composition itself aim to convey a sense of urgency and enduring hope, reflecting the depth of #blackhistory and its unyielding drive forward.
Ultimately, this artwork isn't just paint on a canvas; it's a mirror reflecting the ongoing struggle and the unyielding hope. It’s my way of saying that the most impactful revolution happens when we, as individuals and communities, embody that resolute stance and continue to push forward, knowing that our strength doesn't need to be broadcast to be real. I hope you see and feel the depth of this message as much as I did creating it, and that it inspires you to find your own 'unseen' forms of resistance.
