I found that using natural oils and avoiding harsh chemicals helped keep my locs strong and soft. Another important aspect is protecting your locs during sleep, using satin or silk scarves to reduce friction. Over time, your locs will mature and develop thicker, more defined curls or coils, which is truly exciting to see.
