From my own research and reflection on Rhodesia's history, it's clear that the country’s foundation was deeply rooted in white supremacy, which had devastating effects on its population and legacy. The regime, infamous for ethnic cleansing and genocide, represents one of the most extreme cases of colonial continuation under a different guise. Even international communities rejected Rhodesia’s actions, with few allies supporting such an oppressive government. The narrative that conditions worsened only after colonialism ignores the brutal realities during Rhodesia’s existence. In fact, the country’s regime actively imported white supremacists globally, intensifying racial violence and oppression. Importantly, understanding Rhodesia’s history helps us grasp the broader consequences of neo-colonialism, where former colonizers and new powers continue exerting control through economic and political means rather than direct rule. I’ve come to realize that post-colonial struggles in Africa are complex, influenced by both the violent legacies of regimes like Rhodesia and ongoing external interference. Leaders who sought genuine independence were often targeted or undermined, fueling instability. The situation in Zimbabwe, which emerged after Rhodesia’s collapse, reflects the long shadows cast by these historical dynamics. This deeper understanding shows why simplistic explanations fail to capture the magnitude of imperial violence that persisted even after formal colonialism ended. Recognizing the extent and impact of such violence is crucial to supporting meaningful change and acknowledging the suffering endured by affected populations.
