Will my cacti survive this time?

🌵 Will My Cacti Survive This Time? 🌵

Years ago, I dipped my toes into plant parenthood with cacti… and…they didn’t make it 🪦😂. Fast forward to now: my garden is thriving with veggies and herbs, and even though it looks like it’s ALREADY stressed out, I couldn’t resist grabbing this $5 clearance succulent pot from Walmart. Surely now that I’ve grown tomatoes and watermelons, I can keep succulents alive, right?

Today’s revival mission:

✔️ Trimmed away the dried, crispy leaves 🍂

✔️ Gave them a good soak of water 💧

✔️ Set some bits for propagation out to dry

After she drinks a bit, I’ll be repotting it into a clay pot and will make a post detailing the process. It feels full-circle coming back to where I started, but with way more plant knowledge under my belt 🌱. So the question is… will my cacti survive this time, or am I about to repeat history? 👀 Stay tuned.

Would you take a chance on a clearance succulent rescue?

... Read moreIt's so exciting to bring home a clearance plant, especially one labeled a 'SURVIVOR CACTUS EDITION' like mine! But let's be real, seeing those shriveled leaves and bone-dry soil can be disheartening. I've been there, staring at a plant wondering, 'What's wrong with this plant?' It’s tricky because sometimes, shriveled leaves can mean too little water, but surprisingly, they can also be a sign of too much water causing root rot! So, how do you tell the difference? If you poke your finger into the soil and it feels rock hard, like a desert, and those leaves are thin and crispy (my $5 rescue definitely had some desiccated tissue!), then it’s likely thirst. A good soak, like I gave mine, is usually the first step. But if the soil is damp, and the leaves are shriveling and turning mushy or black, that might be a sign of root rot. That's a whole other ball game, and often requires repotting into fresh, dry soil and checking the roots for damage. Another common concern for cacti and succulents, which I've been learning about, is differentiating between corking and rot. This is super important because one is natural, and the other is deadly! Corking is when the base of your cactus or succulent develops a woody, brown, or grayish texture. It’s a natural process, like a tree trunk, for older plants to support their growth. It's usually firm to the touch. Rot, on the other hand, is generally soft, mushy, and often black or dark brown. It might also smell foul. If you gently press a corked area, it'll be firm; if you press a rotted area, it might give way or feel slimy. If it's rot, you need to act fast: cut away all affected tissue with a sterile knife until only healthy, clean plant material remains, then let it callus over for several days before attempting to re-root it in dry soil. It's a drastic step, but often the only way to save your plant from 'no more death in the pot!' For shriveled leaves due to underwatering, beyond the initial soak, consistency is key. I've learned to check the soil moisture regularly. For propagation, like the bits I set out to dry, patience is a virtue! Letting the cut ends callus for a few days (or even a week for larger pieces) prevents rot when they're finally placed on soil. This method helps create new 'SURVIVOR' plants from your existing one. After my initial rescue, my plan is indeed to repot into a well-draining clay pot, as mentioned. Clay pots are fantastic because they allow the soil to breathe and dry out more evenly, which is crucial for succulents that hate wet feet. Making sure there's fresh, gritty succulent soil too, helps prevent future issues with dry or waterlogged conditions. Removing all that 'debris' and 'dried leaves' from around the base, as I did, isn't just for aesthetics; it helps prevent pests and diseases from harbored in decaying matter. It's all part of creating a healthy environment for your plant to thrive. So, whether you're dealing with a rescue plant or just trying to keep your existing succulents happy, always pay attention to the soil, the feel of the leaves, and be ready to differentiate between natural processes like corking and dangerous issues like rot. It's a continuous learning curve, but seeing a plant bounce back is incredibly rewarding!
