Come feed horses w/ me 🐴

2025/1/8 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! So glad you're here to dive deeper into the world of horse feeding with me. You know, every evening when it's time to feed dinner, it’s one of my favorite parts of the day. There's just something incredibly grounding about watching these magnificent animals enjoy their meal. When I first started out, I had so many questions about what to feed my horses and where to find the best quality hay and concentrates. It can be a bit overwhelming, right? For my horses here in Pennsylvania, I focus on a balanced diet that truly meets their individual needs. Generally, a horse's diet revolves around good quality forage – that's hay or pasture. I always make sure they have access to plenty of fresh, green pasture when available, but during the colder months or when pasture isn't rich enough, hay becomes the backbone of their diet. I personally look for local hay suppliers, often just by asking around at other local barns or even doing a quick online search for 'hay suppliers near me' in my area of Pennsylvania. It’s amazing how many small farms produce excellent hay right in our backyard! When selecting hay, I always check for a fresh, sweet smell and a greenish color, avoiding anything dusty or moldy. Beyond forage, concentrates like pellets or sweet feed provide additional energy and nutrients, especially important for active horses, pregnant mares, or those with specific dietary requirements. I work closely with my vet to determine the right type and amount of concentrate for each horse, as their needs can change with age, activity level, and even the season. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach! I also supplement with vitamins and minerals as advised by the vet, ensuring they get everything they need for strong bones and a shiny coat. Finding the right 'food for horses near me' also extends to looking for local feed stores. Many of them carry a wide range of brands and often have knowledgeable staff who can offer advice. I’ve found some fantastic small businesses that not only stock quality feed but also support the local equestrian community. It’s worth checking out reviews and asking for recommendations from other horse owners in your area. The actual process of feeding dinner is quite a ritual. I prepare their individual portions, making sure each horse gets exactly what they need. There's a certain peacefulness in the routine – the clatter of buckets, the soft nuzzles, and the contented munching sounds. It’s more than just providing food; it's a moment of connection and care. If you're new to horse ownership or just curious, remember that consistency is key, and always prioritize quality and freshness in their diet. And most importantly, enjoy every moment of it!
