Alocasia Propagations

2025/1/2 Edited to

... Read moreSeeing those first little leaves emerge from an Alocasia propagation is such a joy! It really makes you feel like a plant wizard. When I first started trying to propagate my Alocasias, I wasn't sure if it was even possible, but with a bit of patience and the right methods, you absolutely can expand your collection. Most Alocasias, including popular ones like Alocasia Zebrina, are best propagated through division or by planting the corms (also known as cormels) that form around the mother plant's base. For me, these methods have yielded the most consistent success. Let me walk you through how I usually do it: Method 1: Propagating Alocasia by Division This is often the easiest and most successful way to get new Alocasia plants, especially if your mother plant is mature and has multiple growth points. Unpotting and Cleaning: Gently remove your Alocasia from its pot. Shake off as much soil as you can from the roots. You might want to rinse the root ball carefully under lukewarm water to get a clearer view of the corms and root structure. Identifying Divisions: Look for natural divisions or separate plants with their own root systems. Sometimes, you'll see smaller plants growing off the main rhizome. Separating: Using a clean, sharp knife or sterilized shears, carefully separate these divisions. Make sure each section has some roots attached and at least one leaf or a growth point. For Alocasia Zebrina propagation, I've found it important to be extra gentle with the roots. Repotting: Pot each new division into its own small pot with fresh, well-draining Alocasia-friendly soil mix. Water thoroughly. Method 2: Propagating Alocasia from Corms (Cormels) Alocasia corms are small, bulb-like structures that form at the base of the plant's stem, usually underground. They look a bit like tiny potatoes. Harvesting Corms: When you unpot your Alocasia for repotting or division, you'll often find these corms nestled amongst the roots. Gently detach them from the mother plant. I usually give them a quick rinse to clean off any soil. Preparing Corms: Some people like to peel the outer layer of the corm, but I've had success leaving it on. You can choose to sprout them in water, sphagnum moss, or directly in soil. In Water: Place the corms just barely submerged in a shallow dish of water. Change the water every few days. In Sphagnum Moss: Nest the corms in moist sphagnum moss inside a sealed container (like a plastic takeaway box) to create a humid environment. This is my preferred method for consistent moisture. In Soil: Plant the corms shallowly in a small pot with moist, airy potting mix, just barely covering them with soil. Providing Warmth and Humidity: Regardless of the medium, warmth and high humidity are key for rooting Alocasia corms. A seedling heat mat can speed up the process, and a clear dome or plastic bag over the pot/container helps maintain humidity. Patience is Key: This can take weeks, or even months, but eventually, you'll see a shoot emerge, followed by a tiny leaf. Once the first leaf unfurls and roots are established, you can pot it up if it's not already in soil. General Tips for Alocasia Propagation Success: Sterilize your tools: Always use clean, sharp tools to prevent infections. Avoid overwatering: While rooting, keep the medium consistently moist but not soggy, which can lead to rot. Provide indirect light: Young Alocasia propagations appreciate bright, indirect light. Humidity is crucial: Alocasias love humidity, so a humidifier or pebble tray can help your new babies thrive. Don't rush to fertilize: Wait until the new plant has several established leaves before starting a diluted fertilizing schedule. It's incredibly rewarding to watch these little propagations grow into lush, beautiful plants. Even if you've heard Alocasias are tricky, don't be afraid to try propagating them. My experience has shown me that with a little care, you'll have more Alocasias than you know what to do with – which is a great problem to have for any plant lover!
