Are you looking to expand your Alocasia collection without breaking the bank? Or perhaps you just want to share the plant love with friends? Good news! You absolutely can propagate Alocasia, and one of the most rewarding methods is through their corms. I recently went through the process of separating and potting up a bunch of my own Alocasia corms, and it’s surprisingly straightforward! What are Alocasia Corms, and How Do You Find Them? Alocasia plants grow small, bulb-like structures called corms (sometimes referred to as 'cormels') at the base of their main stem, often just below the soil line. These are essentially tiny plant factories waiting to sprout! The best time to find them is usually when you're repotting your Alocasia. Gently remove the plant from its pot and carefully brush away the soil around the roots and base. You'll likely spot several small, round or oval corms attached to the main root ball or lying loose in the soil. My Process: From Separation to Potting Gentle Separation: Once I found the corms, I carefully detached them from the mother plant. Some might be firmly attached, requiring a gentle twist or a clean cut with sterilized snips (always sterilize your tools!). I try to keep any tiny roots attached to the corm if possible, but it’s not essential. Corm Preparation (Optional but Recommended by Me!): Many people propagate corms directly, but I've found success by gently peeling the papery outer layer of the corm. This can sometimes speed up germination by allowing moisture to penetrate more easily. Just be careful not to damage the corm itself. Choosing Your Propagation Medium: This is where you can experiment! I've tried a few methods, but my favorites for Alocasia corms are water and sphagnum moss. Each has its pros and cons: Water Propagation (My Go-To): I love this method because you can actually see the roots forming! I place my peeled corms in a shallow dish or a small propagation station with just enough water to cover the bottom half of the corm. It's crucial to change the water every couple of days to prevent rot and keep it fresh. I keep them in a warm spot with bright, indirect light. Sphagnum Moss (Great for Humidity): For a more humid environment, I use moist (not soaking wet!) sphagnum moss. I place the corms nestled in the moss inside a clear container with a lid, creating a mini greenhouse effect. This helps maintain high humidity, which Alocasia corms love. Just make sure to air it out occasionally to prevent mold. Patience is Key!: Alocasia corms can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to sprout. Don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results. Some of mine took a good two months before showing any signs of life. You'll first notice tiny roots emerging, followed by a small shoot that will eventually unfurl into a leaf. Potting Up Your Babies: Once the corms have developed a good root system (usually an inch or two long) and a small leaf has started to emerge, they're ready for their own pot! I use a well-draining aroid mix, usually a blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. Plant the corm just below the surface of the soil, ensuring the roots are covered. Caring for Your New Alocasia Plants Your newly potted Alocasia babies will appreciate a warm, humid environment with bright, indirect light. Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Remember, Alocasia can be a bit dramatic, so don't be alarmed if a leaf yellows or drops, especially if they're adjusting to a new environment. With a little patience and care, you'll soon have a thriving collection of Alocasia plants that you grew all by yourself!
